In a new paper with @mweitzel.bsky.social in @pspolisci.bsky.social, we ask: how well does the field of political science prepare scholars of the Middle East for fieldwork? We surveyed MENA academics and found an important gap between formal training and practice. /1

A recent @foreignpolicy.com article uses survey research to argue just under half of Lebanese oppose disarmament. Some thoughts on why this study, and similar survey research, should be extremely explicit about methodology & cautious in interpretation:

“What we are seeing is the weakness of strong states. Regimes that rely on repression face a challenge: The more force they deploy, the more they risk exposing their own brutality to politically persuadable observers. New paper in @ajpseditor.bsky.social. Is descriptive representation good for substantive representation? Why do voters stay loyal to corrupt and poorly governing ethnic parties? I argue that we ought to focus less on patronage and more on dignity concerns. Defiant pride can come at a price. 1/🧵

Last month, Lebanon held its first local elections since 2016. Over the past nine years, the country has experienced a series of upheavals and crises - yet the most remarkable feature of these elections was (mostly) how much they resembled previous ones. Some key takeaways /1

In case you’re currently on the market: With a welcoming stance toward non-Swiss students (34.7% of the student body), Switzerland remains an attractive option. Also notable: a clear shift in interest among non-US students re PhD opportunities (shared via @marcelsalathe.bsky.social): polisky

Just read @dmasterson.bsky.social's latest in the APSR. Wow! It's the rare instance of an RCT that assigns *network structure* then observes problem-solving behavior. www.cambridge.org/core/journal... We learn network density has upsides (⬆️ engagement) and downsides (⬇️ unique resources).
Figure 1. Research Design Intuition

Note: Randomly sampled groups include participants drawn at random from the census while networked groups include a single participant randomly sampled from the census (a ‘seed’) and nine participants recruited from the seed’s social network.

The group-level experiment compares full groups across the two arms. The individual-level experiment compares randomly sampled individuals (orange circles) across the two arms.Networked groups have more dialogueNetworked groups have access to fewer resources
