Thankfully, my parents weren't ever ones to do this. 🙏 But one time I rode home with a friend after a travel tournament basketball game and the entire hour was spent picking apart every single thing they did, and it was both eye-opening and absolutely awkward to sit through.

Dear everyone, Yes, students now are different than students ten years ago. I would worry - a lot - if they were not. They have different skills, different forms of knowledge, different new words. Finding all that out is one of the joys of continuing to teach.

Man, imagine you're minding your own business, getting kind of drunk with your friends at a picturesque brewery in Maine, when suddenly John Roberts walks by and you get to start heckling him. Must have felt incredible. That's the dream. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/u...
The chief justice used to preside over a Supreme Court whose members were afforded more privacy and freedom than many other public officials. Once, years ago, Mr. Lipson and the chief justice found themselves up the peninsula from Port Clyde without a car, Mr. Lipson recalled in an interview. So he stuck out his thumb by the side of the road and a pickup truck pulled over. He and the nation’s top jurist hopped in the back and hitchhiked back to town.

Now, Mr. Lipson said, he is cautious about introducing his friend to strangers. This year, on an outing to nearby Monhegan Island, people recognized the chief justice as he walked by a brewery and started to chant: You should be ashamed.

You've said it before, and it's an apt banner: we need high resources AND high teacher autonomy. Too many administrators act as if those conditions are mutually exclusive. In truth, the combination of both is what builds and sustains career teachers.

So much this! We increasingly talk about college as workforce readiness, and not an opportunity to learn, and that's the only scenario in which getting credits "out of the way" early makes sense. But a lot of us actually want to learn! Why would you "reward" learners by taking away learning?

Edu policy that is “bipartisan” usually means it’s a conservative project. As I tell my students, bipartisan consensus related to education is a red flag; it almost always means a turn away from public education and towards state control of children, teachers, & curriculum.

The federal government, by which I mean THIS federal government, picking this up, at a time when they are otherwise draining edu of all substance, should be all you need to know about what a grift SoR is. If it were effective at enhancing understanding and education, they’d destroy it.

Take of the Day #2: Any education reform needs to start with doubling the number of teachers so that class size is 16-18 and each MS/HS teacher is responsible for 90 students MAX (+ pay them MIN $75K).That’s what rich people in cities like NYC are paying $75K per year for and what all kids deserve.

What do we mean when we say a school is a "good school?" It sounds simple, but in my experience, it's a whole lot deeper. Read on: "What We Mean When We Say “Good School” (pt. 1)." thejosevilson.com/what-we-mean-when…

What We Mean When We Say “Good School” (pt. 1)
One problem is that American ideas of what it means to be a "good school" start from places of racism and deficit. In my first year of teaching, teachers shared tales of the district superintendent ripping down bulletin boards and tossing notebooks. The dean would call a "Code Blue" on the loudspeaker to mark his appearance for every adult. His slovenly appearance belied his desire to impose his will on schools from Harlem to Inwood.

The problem evident in the post-Brown era is that desegregation was necessary but not sufficient—there are way too many unaddressed systemic factors + political countermeasures. Underlying most of them, as she identified in her 2019 piece, is unyielding white supremacy.

Watching the response to the NHJ article, I’m struck by how, when an unequal system becomes a problem for each family to manage, we focus on how they navigated it, scoring the private choice instead of demanding that the public system remedy the inequality.

This article captures a lot of what I believe math education should be, even though I'm not sure the gym analogy is the best one. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
The great challenge of teaching is not to transmit information—machines do that cheaply now—but to engineer those moments of genuine understanding reliably enough that students come to crave them. The intellectual equivalent of the body’s feedback is real and, when it arrives, more powerful than any endorphin. It is the “Aha!” of a hard problem suddenly solved, a proof that clicks into place, the moment when an argument you’ve been wrestling with finally holds its own weight. I have seen it on students’ faces, and there’s nothing quite like it.
