Tenor, vehicle and ground have been appearing in lots of English curriculum plans, promoted by a few eduinfluencers. I've been v sceptical about their usefulness in teaching metaphor. In a forthcoming EMC resource, linguist Peter Stockwell explains the problem with them.

I've just published my debut poetry collection for adults and I am giving it away for free online. Here's a poem from the book, below. I hawked it to some fancy magazines, but no luck. Very proud to self-publish it. Download the entire book here: archive.org/download/the... #BookSky #PoetryCommunity

Although, (probably taking out of original context here), thinking about alternatives and conditionals is said to be a hall mark of our intelligence according to Peter Godfrey-Smith in Metazoa. He says the mind is like an arena in which we can experience these alternatives.

If you take the time to explore Christian’s diagrams, (as his students would be doing), you will soon find they get you thinking and realising all sorts of novel relationships between concepts you have not connected before. A clear indicator of a great explanatory model.

Memories are not stored in the brain
We often assume that our memories are stored in our brains, just like a hard drive stores data. However, philosopher of time Victoria Trumbull argues this is a radical mistake. Drawing on the philosop...

The focus on memory is the focus on the product. Much better to focus on the act of learning, the process.

Or just "practice" (and if needed, "to practise remembering").

When I wrote Teaching Meaning, people commented on how well it captured teaching and learning. Yet, I didn't need to refer to storage or retrieval at all. Except, in this passage:
Through the ways we talk about knowledge, we create and
bring forth the idea of knowledge, to which our students will adapt.

It’s our responsibility to converse within our communities and
reflect on our criteria. The same is true of our students. They exist,
of course. We can all agree, for example, who they are, what they
look like, the form of their handwriting, and their school grades.
But through the ways we converse about students, we bring forth
who they are. If we discuss learning as storing and retrieving
information, then we bring forth students as storers and retriev-
ers. If we discuss learning as adapting and making meaning, then
we bring forth students as adaptive meaning makers.

On another note, von Foerster and Maturana always argued that there "everything is here and now", everything else is a construction we make in the moment (including past and future).

Right, from a teaching perspective, improving memory is a particular frame. IMO, I think we get more out of the term "remembering" than "retrieving". And retrieving edges us towards a computational-storage account of learning, rather than meaning making.

Yes! Well, principally in my latest book, Teaching Meaning, which is fundamentals of enactivism applied to teaching. So, while I don't use the term "Structural coupling" the idea is baked into it. And chapter 1 is: Meaning can't be transmitted.
Figure 12: A conversation showing a dance between convergence (thinner lines) and divergence (thicker lines). The teacher fosters agreement by attempting clarity in communication. In turn, teachers prompt students to express and explore their understandings, which the teacher then absorbs.

Christian Moore-Anderson @cmooreanderson.eurosky.social · 30/09/2026
My views come principally from enactive cognitive science, in which the idea of "storage" can't be obtained when beginning from its core fundamental assumptions. However, I recognise that people might want to frame "storage" in different ways. But no *thing* is deposited or "retrieved".

I had a play at making a stock and flow model today, to represent a continuous fermenter. A stock within a stock.
A stock and flow model of a countinuous fermenter, with a population stock and flow model inside it.

When it comes to education, this is a better definition IMO: Learning is structural coupling. than: Learning is a change in the LTM. The latter might be more useful in efficiency views and measurement, but not in overall curriculum or educational views.

Another possible negative effect of grade retention: lower earnings later in life. A new study from Texas finds temporary gains in test scores, but also lower high school graduation rates and, by age 26, substantially lower earnings. With important caveats. wp.me/p2nWPo-6e3
