Spatial models cannot compensate for sampling designs unstructured relative to isotopic variation: implications for baseline isoscape development in the Mediterranean Sea
Isoscapes – spatial models of stable isotope ratios – are powerful tools for understanding biogeochemical cycles, food web structure, and ecological connectivity. In marine systems, however, broad-scale isoscapes are difficult to constrain because reference datasets are typically heterogeneous and o

Long before intensive human fishing began, Pacific reefs naturally supported far more sharks than Caribbean reefs, according to a new Science study. Learn more in this week’s issue: scim.ag/4x3GBBO
This scanning electron microscope image shows a dermal denticle from a great hammerhead shark (Sphyrna mokarran). Ridges and other features on these toothlike scales reduce drag in fast-swimming sharks. Denticles are shed and preserve in marine sediments, recording past shark assemblages. Fossil denticles from Panama show that Pacific reefs supported 20 times as many sharks as Caribbean reefs before human exploitation and that Caribbean populations have since declined by 75%.

New #isotope #isoscape paper.. Sarah Magozzi leads a huge team building isoscapes for the #Mediterranean Tldr: state of the art statistical models cannot compensate for systematic variance in opportunistic data. Important finding in AI meta-analysis world -cannot just rely on compiled data.
Isoscape models for Med Sea - Note short spatial scale as isotope values revert to the global mean - difficult to resolve larger scale spatial pattern with systematic but un-modelled sources of variance in opportunistic data
