Ghent University members are asking for support, so its institution can investigate Cofnas as its regulations require, and because: "appeals to absolutist academic freedom as a guise for pursuing racist and pseudoscientific research threaten the integrity and credibility of research as a whole"

There are dozens of academics signing this open letter to defend the American Eugenicist Nathan Cofnas from the consequences of his own actions. They are calling him a “whistleblower”
johnarmstrongmaths.com
As academics, we are concerned that Ghent University's disciplinary proceedings against Dr Cofnas appear to constitute retaliation, at least in part, for publicizing academic misconduct that occurred in British universities.

There was a bursting as of an exploding bladder, a slushy nastiness as of a cloven sunfish, a stench as of a thousand opened graves, and a sound that the chronicler would not put on paper. "Bears," thought Dread Cthulhu, sinking back to R'lyeh, "always land on their feet." 3/3?

Quite by accident, Paddington drove his vessel head on against the pursuing jelly which rose above the unclean froth like the stern of a daemon galleon. The awful squid-head with writhing feelers came nearly up to the bowsprit of the sturdy yacht. 2/3

"Bear!" shouted Mr. Curry. "Bear, you've steered the wrong way!" "I'm sorry," said Paddington, fumbling with the ship's wheel. "It is rather difficult with paws." He threw a lever in case it would help. The ship accelerated. There was a mighty eddying and foaming in the noisome brine. 1/3

Some larger illustrations I drew recently 🔍
The artwork shows a scene with a palace and a city square with people walking around the scene. The palace is composed of smaller buildings and has lots of ornaments, hidden statues and murals with various landscapes and portraits. On the right side, there are stairs leading to a scenic overview under gazebo. The view shows some water with a large boat and other palaces on the horizon. City square has a river running through the center with two bridges on both sides. In the foreground, there are carriages and some characters participating in various activities. The artwork was inspired by Rococo style and all characters wear big wigs and extravagant clothes. There are herons flying in the sky and large curtains hanging from the sky as if it's a stage play. The image shows a scene with a decorated city. The city is assembled in layers with arches, bridges and stairs. The buildings are decorated with windows resembling stained glass and there are mosaics on some walls. Behind the city there are imaginary flying vehicles and a kite. In the center of the artwork there's a wall with mosaics and stained glass and a large bow pulled by two blue herons. There's a fountain in front of the wall with a sculpture of two open hands and a heron sitting on it. The middle ground shows a floor decorated with small tiles and various characters participating in different activities. There's a girl walking on the parapet near the water. A possum drinking from a cup on the table. Two ladies sitting at another table holding cups in their hands. A woman in a large hat walking with umbrella in her hand. On the right side there's a young man playing violin while sitting on the parapet. A knight riding a horse and a woman sitting in the boat. In the center of the artwork there's a young couple running towards a vacant boat. There are swans and lilies in the water. The artwork is mostly pink and lilac with some pops of yellow, green and blue. The image shows a Victorian style house with different rooms and characters placed around the house. The house has three floors and 15 rooms plus balcony. There are 30 characters in the piece, 6 dogs and one cat. Rooms from top to bottom: balcony, master bedroom, hall, nursery, attic above nursery, butler's room, 2 servant rooms, study, dining room, hall, restroom, parlor, foyer, kitchen, pantry. Each room has various furniture and a different color scheme. the artwork shows a vertical garden made of four sections. The garden has a fountain, a gate made of arches and four gazebos. There's a circular window on the right side slightly covered by a divider. The garden is decorated with various pots, tiles on the walls, plants and other decorations. There are two small pools in the foreground and a woman with white hair standing in the center of the image. There are 5 more woman in the image sitting on different levels of the artwork. The artwork is mostly blue, green, purple and pink.

I write a monthly newsletter for my department, and almost every month I find incorrect citations. I remember wasting hours in grad school trying to track down a few citations that simply did not exist, though. "Have honest citations" shouldn't be revolutionary or controversial.

Particularly in the context of (appropriate) crackdowns on LLM-generated papers (e.g., on arXiv) and more and more tales of fabricated citations, two reminders: (1) LLMs do not "cite their sources" (2) Using an LLM to generate, complete, or fix LaTeX code can result in fabricated citations

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?
The reactions of some researchers on Twitter finally being held responsible for not having read the very paper they submitted are... something. Mainly, they don't think they should have to check every citation or make sure the data is real and accurate. Because it's too hard, I guess.
