Important piece from CJUU member @imcoasts.bsky.social sensitively grappling with coastal erosion, sea-level rise and the question of relocation: "where we have the opportunity, we must allow nature to function in the way it always has – protecting itself, and our communities, from extreme storms."

1/ Why is atmospheric CO₂ accelerating faster than fossil fuel emissions are growing? The answer is buried in the data, and it's more worrying than most people realise. A thread. 🧵👇
Line chart showing atmospheric CO₂ concentration at Mauna Loa Observatory from 1958 to 2024. A light blue sawtooth line shows raw monthly values, reflecting the seasonal cycle of plant growth. A dark blue smooth line shows the seasonally adjusted record, rising from 315 ppm in 1958 to over 426 ppm in 2024.

A dashed red curve shows the super-exponential fit, with the instantaneous growth rate rising from 0.27%/yr in 1960 to 0.64%/yr in 2024, more than doubling over the period of the record.

So, below is EU President von der Leyen saying that the EU is "not fighting fossil fuels, only emissions." And here is the Saudi envoy to COP30 saying exactly the same thing. I'm telling you: climate politics are unified around the lie that we can keep fossil fuels & still deal w climate anyway.
However, COP30 CEO Ana Toni told a press conference later that day that a "great majority" of country groups they had consulted saw a fossil-fuel roadmap as a "red line". In an interview with Carbon Brief, Dr Osama Faqeeha, deputy environment minister for Saudi Arabia, refused to be drawn on whether a fossil-fuel roadmap was a red line, but
said: "I think the issue is the emissions, it's not the fuel. And our position is that we have to cut emissions regardless."
