This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD: sheets.works/data-viz/hol...
an XKCD comic showing a precariously assembled tower of blocks. much is labelled "all modern digital infrastructure." a thin leg down at the bottom is labelled "A project some random person in Nebraska has been thanklessly maintaining since 2003."

Now here's something I think remarkable. Look very carefully. This isn't a high quality monochrome photo of a bygone street scene. It's a pencil drawing! By the artist Stuart Walton, born in Dewsbury in 1933. I love it!

Another story that needs to be told is that of the Chinese sailors who served in the British Merchant Navy in WW2. Approximately 185,000 men and women served in the Merchant Navy in WW2, including roughly 20,000 Chinese seafarers, manning dangerous Atlantic, Arctic, and coastal convoys.

London mayor Sadiq Khan blocks £50m Met police deal with Palantir
Exclusive: Scotland Yard had been in talks to use Palantir’s AI technology to automate intelligence analysis A £50m Met police deal with the controversial US tech company Palantir has been blocked by the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, with City Hall citing a “clear and serious breach” of procurement rules. Scotland Yard had been in talks, revealed by the Guardian last month, to use Palantir’s AI technology to automate intelligence analysis in criminal investigations. But Khan intervened on Thursday to stop the flagship contract, which would have been Palantir’s largest yet in British policing. Continue reading...

New Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar appeared as a guest on state television M1 for the first time and made shocking statements:
-We will suspend this channel's news service. This isn't about me; I'm not seeking revenge. Our people deserve journalism that reflects the truth.
-We will nationalize the assets given to businesspeople and foundations during the Orbán era.
-The Mathias Corvinus Collegium Foundation, close to Orbán, was transferred 10% of MOL (oil company) and Gedeon Richter (pharmaceutical company) for free. We will take back these shares.-After 16 years of the Orbán era, 400,000 Hungarian children in this country are living in deep poverty.
-President Sulyok is no longer the president of this country in my eyes or in the eyes of the people.
-(In response to the host asking about his meeting with Zelensky as a counterpoint) I get your joke, and l even like it. But your references no longer carry any meaning.
-According to you, Germany has collapsed, there's no internet there, people aren't even having sex. The Hungarian people were laughing at you.
-It was said on this channel that even my young children won't talk to me, when in fact my children live with me.-(When the host interrupted him)
No host in this studio ever dared to interrupt Hungary's most corrupt and most lying prime minister.
-(When asked about the legal basis for closing the news service) For someone on this channel to accuse me of breaking the law looks like a thief accusing the police.
