2026 has likely finished with 85 days exceeding 25C at #London Heathrow Airport this is a staggering 25 days above next highest year, 2018. We've never known anything like it.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

Our taproom has appeared in at least one AI generated guide site and every word has been utter nonsense: generic stuff about food (we don't do food), wrong drinks and hours, apparently we have parking - nope. I can't understand how such incomptence could attract enough of an audience to bother.

I spent 6 months working as a researcher on the development of a slavery museum in Doha. Couldn't sleep properly that whole time. Just couldn't stop thinking about how awful it was and how so many people try to minimise that. The museum is well worth visiting: msheirebmuseums.com/en/about/bin...

The house pays tribute and acknowledges the social, cultural and economic contribution of formerly enslaved people to the development of human civilisations.

This weekend we'll have the first of our seasonal special green hop beers available at our taproom. We've brewed just 20 litres of Hopdodger IPA using fresh hops foraged from Kent by one of our lovely regulars who also helped out with the brew. Get yourself a pint while it lasts!

Number of 25C days each year at #London Heathrow from 1949 we see 2026 with 82 days is far exceeding all historical precedent. The former record year 2018 now eclipsed by 20 days and we're not done either. Remarkable year.

Saw it at the Old Vic earlier in the year and it was just wonderful. Been telling anyone who would listen since to go see it. Hopefully it will be back in a theatre soon.

Couple of years ago my partner decided he'd had enough of the tupperware lid problem, took the whole lot out of the cupboard, matched tubs to lids then standardised to the ones we had the most of and got rid of all the rest. Now we have one set of boxes that all the lids fit. Gamechanger.

Summer's back, at least for the weekend. We've got tables in the sunshine and cold beers available 2-8pm Saturday and Sunday.
Tables outside a row of railway arches full of customers drinking and chatting, in the background the sun is setting.

The Dog & Bell is definitely top three. My others would be: Shirkers Rest, New Cross. Micropub with a great beer selection, good ciders and a snack wall. Pelton Arms, Greenwich. Good beer and food, nice garden. Lovely place to hang out away from the crowds and tourists.

It may be a rainy start to the Bank Holiday weekend, but you can still enjoy a beer inside our taproom. Hopefully tomorrow the outdoor seats will be back in the sun. We're open our usual hours, 2-8pm Saturday & Sunday, closed Monday.
People inside a railway arch, some sitting, sone standing, all chatting and drinking.

Nunhead is one of those places that somehow hung on to its small independent shops, and resisted all supermarkets until the co-op local recently, despite not being a particularly wealthy area. It has a very old fashioned high street, including a baker that does split tins and rolls like the 1980s.

My aunts and uncles weren't even Irish speakers. It was a totally different way of speaking English, but maybe makes more sense if they had Irish speaking parents or grandparents. My younger cousins in Ireland did learn Irish and I wonder how much that has influenced how they phrase English.

My Irish aunt used to say "remind me of your youth" to ask me how old I was, which was confusing but beautiful once I worked out what the question was.

this is why Viz is so good. they take the time to get the details right, as in this panel from The Real Ale Twats where they actually bothered to research historical malt mashing techniques (cc @totalcurtis.bsky.social )
"due in no small part to their use of the traditional decoction mashing technique during their brewing process, rather than the new-fangled infusion mashing"

Also, they are really easily available. There are piles of disposable barbeques as you walk into supermarkets, so people are being encouraged to have a barbeque instead of a picnic.

I think they are mainly used by people with very limited storage and socialising space. Years ago when we lived in a really tiny home (45m2) with no outdoor space we'd put one on the front wall and friends stood around it in the street. They definitely burn through. Scorch marks in all the parks...
