Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Thinking about this and how, over the last few years, a sizeable gap has opened between the perception of the fat cat inside and outside of the Sheffield beer scene. I have to walk past it to get home, and I've been in maybe once in the last year. It's fallen behind other great local boozers. 140

Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 01/10/2026This was a really interesting read, mostly because whilst in Manchester last Thursday, I decided that I actually don't really like going to Cafe Beermoth and that i should stop including it on my usual Manchester pub route. It's good to hear a well-made counterpoint. 253
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Right. According to the diary, we've got a group of 20 or so 'beer writers' booked in at the pub for the evening in 2 weeks. Which of you lot is it? 😂 220

Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 22/09/2026I was having a conversation with someone today who wanted to know where they could find my writing. I told them my blog name, but they wanted me to type it into Google for them. Thus did I see that there was an AI summary of my blog readily available. The fact of which made me want to scream. 000
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Pint and Book! It's probably my book of the year, unless something truly remarkable pops up. 2200
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 21/09/2026I've found out I have a very strong aversion to the phrase "anybody who knows me know that...". It's completely irrational, founded in absolutely nothing, but anytime I hear/read that phrase, I find myself rolling my eyes and thinking 'oh do shut up'. 000
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Day 1 of 8 days leave - I have not stepped outside the door of my flat. I've made a chilli, played video games, and read smut. Now I'm getting into a freshly made bed for an early night. God, I needed a day like this. 060
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Right. 6-close tonight, and then I am off for 8 days. Crawling towards that finish line. 020
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Right folks, you've got 2 hours before I need to be at work. What albums should I be listening to whilst I do the line clean and sort the cellar out? 431
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I would contend that this data is a better indicator of the number of pubs that are gullible enough to pay for cask marque accreditation than of beer quality. Lots of great cask around here, yet I dont know many publicans that think CM accreditation is worth more than the paper it is written on. 120

Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 03/09/2026Also I am absolutely desperate for a break from it. I need some time away before it makes me want to brain myself on the cellar walls. Both of these things can coexist and are completely normal actually. 030
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 03/09/2026I'm not comfortable with being sentimental. I find it difficult. But the pub I'm at now feels different to any I've been at before. I find myself peridoically looking around and smiling because it all just feels right? It feels like we've created something together. It's wonderful. 0111

Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 01/09/2026Quite irked by CAMRA posting about "the best 16 pubs in the UK". The vast majority of which are predictably both southern and rural. Nothing against those pubs, but when did tweeness become a deciding factor in what makes a good pub? What's wrong with the north? What's wrong with city pubs? 190
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 01/09/2026Delighted to find out I have Sunday off this week and the following Monday/Tuesday next. It's the first time I've had 2 days off in a row for 2 months and the first time I've had 3 since I went to Bologna in the first week of May. 040
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 31/08/2026I've been reading Pleasure Beach over the last few weeks. It was very frustrating. Parts I loved, parts I loathed. It actually made me feel dumb which was a horrible feeling. I don't think books should make people feel like that. 050
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Yep. Similar weather today = busiest lunch time trade we've ever had 😅 030
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 27/08/2026We always joke about being a shit weather pub. We've not had a great summer. thunderstorms accompanied by absolutely torrential rain today though and we've got a full rail of checks and the busiest lunchtime I've seen in months 😅 140
Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 25/08/2026I found out that Dolly Parton had passed because I turned on my mobile data in a pub that didn't have WiFi, and I had 9 new messages from 6 different people. I am devastated. I love her. She was an amazing woman, and one of the finest songwriters of all time. Thank you Dolly 💖 050

Michael Deakin @caskapital.bsky.social · 22/08/2026Something that never ceases to amaze me is how many calls I get from breweries wanting to sell me beer, but who have at no point thought about how that beer is going to physically get to me. 040
