this is so fucked - 2 of the staunch forest defenders who were arrested today have been given bail conditions including a curfew from 10pm to 7am every day until their court date in january. obscene overreach by cops trying to intimidate protestors 🙄
A screenshot of an Instagram post from Bob brown foundation featuring a pro Esther logged onto a logging machine with the caption “forest defenders arrested and given outrageous curfew”a post from bob brown foundation instagram “Two retired Tasmanian health professionals have today been placed on an outrageous nightly curfew until January 2027 after protesting to defend Lutruwita / Tasmania's native forests from logging.
They are two of three peaceful forest activists who were arrested in the Central Highlands for halting logging destruction.
In an example of complete police overreach, the two protesters were bailed from Bridgewater Police Station this afternoon with a strict 10 pm - 7 am house curfew until 25 January 2027. They are also forbidden from entering any "permanent timber production zone" land until their court date. This accounts for all public forests, approximately 12% of Tasmania's land mass.
"This is draconian overreach and impinges on our basic rights to protest in a fair and reasonable society. It won't work and I will appeal this home imprisonment for standing up for our native forests and all the animals that live within,"-Alison Salisbury, 61 years old retired nurse and grandmother.
Protesters are willing to wear their charges for civil disobedience when breaking unjust laws that protect the loggers, but outrageous bail conditions imposing house imprisonment on forest defenders is truly appalling.”

How on Earth did I not read this yet? really interesting and honestly kind of brazen modelling of the entire lifecycle - downstream, data centres, upstream use - of AI. Puts AI industry at 1.1% of total global energy, about the same for global emissions. More than 10x previously stated estimates
Final Results and Concluding Thoughts
Adding it all up, we estimate that the AI sector is responsible for almost 1,900 TWh of global energy consumption in 2026. And after accounting for additional factors that we did not explicitly analyze, like the construction of new electrical substations, robotic-centric warehouses, water reclamation facilities, and other infrastructure specifically designed to support the data center buildout, it’s likely that total AI-driven global energy demand is already closer to 2,000 TWh. Even at 1,900 TWh, the AI share of total global energy use in 2026 would be roughly 1.1%. We also estimate, after adding up all the sectoral numbers and landing at roughly 650 million metric tons of AI-driven CO2 emissions, that the AI share of global GHG emissions in 2026 stands at about 1.2%, with total annual global emissions sitting at roughly 55 gigatons of CO2-eq, albeit with a wide range of figures from EDGAR to UNEP (anywhere from 53 gigatons to 58 gigatons depending on a broad array of different assumptions). As we’ve discussed already, these numbers are much higher than many others in the media and academia have guessed on the basis of simplistic calculations and naïve assumptions.

The projections up to 2030 are obviously far worse and imply a catastrophic impact to global ecological stability. ChatGPT alone “processes approximately 2.5 billion prompts per day worldwide.”122 The scale of AI growth and diffusion globally is truly astounding, and the industry’s corresponding ecological footprint will soon rival that of major countries like India. It's not farfetched at all to think that the AI share of total global energy demand could rise to something like 5% by 2030, rivaling and in some cases surpassing the footprint of established dominant industries. The potential consequences of this extra resource pressure on biodiversity, global warming, freshwater scarcity, and biogeochemical cycles could be absolutely staggering and devastating for the…

“This is a devastating decision. It's a decision that will quite literally kill people - we will be able to attribute a measurable proportion of the increased deaths & disasters & destruction of property from accelerating climate chaos to this decision.“ #FossilFuel induced #ClimateChange #Auspol
Article excerpt
But I think the real earthquake here is that a major Australian climate and environment
organisation has today very publicly called this a catastrophic failure of our institutions. And they set out systematically exactly why that is. The process was clear. The context was clear. Everything was set up for the decision to be made to protect life. But the decision was
made to protect profits instead, and screw life. In my view, it's been obvious for quite some time that Australia's governing institutions - our executive governments, our parliaments, our media, our "independent" planning bodies, our police - have absolutely no capacity to actually face up to the reality of the climate crisis. Coercive, extractive power closes ranks to protect and prolong itself. As that photo at the top demonstrates again, governments will use the police to protect profits
against people and the planet. Many of us have recognised this for a long time. Many have talked about it, mostly quietly,
behind closed doors.

“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
