Peter Hegemann, one of the 2026 medicine laureates, cracked the biochemistry of how light can be used to regulate the activity of neurons. This research, using what is now called #optogenetics, has paved the way for others to create tools to track and map out neural networks. #NobelPrize #chemsky 🧪

Dogs, like humans, may favor consonants over vowels when parsing continuous speech, according to a new Science study comparing brain activity in the two species. Learn more: scim.ag/4ryMGEo
(A) ITC values for humans and dogs, averaged over the three midline electrodes (humans: Fpz, FCz, and CPz; dogs: Fz, FCz, and Cz), and participants in the frequency spectrum between 0 and 9 Hz, including word frequency and its first three harmonics independent of syllable-level contributions (1.33, 2.67, 5.33, and 6.67 Hz), syllable frequency (4 Hz), and speech sound frequency (8 Hz). Comparable electrode placement between species is illustrated on schematic brains by the yellow dots at analogous cortical lobes, frontal (red), parietal (blue), temporal (orange), and occipital (green). (B) Estimated marginal means ± SE of word-level ITC for each condition in humans and dogs, derived from GLMMs.

Beyond BMI: The diet-microbiome context of the obesity paradox
In Nature, Desharnais et al. show that in diverse mouse models, anti-PD-1 sensitivity is more closely linked to diet-microbiome-metabolite ecosystem than to obesity-associated metabolic dysfunction. Their findings reinforce body mass index (BMI) as an incomplete proxy for host biology and suggest strategies to improve anti-PD-1 efficacy without inducing obesity.
