Changes to your energy costs

Hi there,
We're writing to let you know about changes to our standard variable energy prices from 5
October 2026. Electricity unit rates will increase by 9.4%, electricity standing charges by 6.12%, and gas unit rates by 11.6%.
We understand this is unwelcome news.
Increasing our prices is never a decision we take lightly. This is a result of volatility in global energy markets and increases in network charges that are outside of our control. We continue to do everything we can for our customers to limit the impact of the ongoing volatility in the energy market.
These changes will be automatically reflected on bills from 5 October 2026.

Devastatingly accurate. I walk my 11 year old in the morning and we regularly witness speeding, distracted driving, red light breaking, pedestrian crossing infringement, driving on footpaths and more. I have been threatened by motorists while still holding her hand. It's out of control.
Extracted text from the article.
It’s tempting to reply that I walked to school in Norway, in a semi urban area, from the age of seven years old. The majority of the over 2.5 km route each way did not have a footpath. It did however have a low speed limits and lots of speed bumps. And perhaps most importantly: children walking to school, or wherever they wanted, was an accepted road user group. That is not the case in Ireland it seems.

I should follow up to say, if we want to open our front doors for children to play, we should make (temporarily) closing streets to cars easier, we should ensure there are welcoming, playable spaces within (independent) walking distance, and we should make local walking and cycling routes safe.

Asking ordinary people to make not-insignificant sacrifices (let your plants die, no paddling pools for your small kids in the heat) to cover for utility mismanagement, and then adding neighbour surveillance as enforcement, is an indictment of our government's relationship with its citizens.
