I love these girls and their dad singing so much, and the surprise visit from Annie Crummer too... had me pretty weepy, and then falling down a wild NZ music rabbit hole. Recommend www.rnz.co.nz/national/pro...

I love this idea But it's also something academia does badly, funding for boring things. But I don't know that we need a separate application process for it

New study suggests that a shortage of secure bike parking is limiting e-bike adoption. Glad to see this issue getting attention. It's intuitive that people with quasi-secure bike storage might be OK risking a pedal bike, but not an e-bike that's more expensive. doi.org/10.1016/j.tr...

This is good bike parking. It has angular tubing, which prevents the quiet use of pipe cutters for theft. The racks are also spaced far enough apart to allow for larger bikes to be parked with room for the rider to maneuver while on foot. Also, this is entrance-adjacent to the building.

My mental image when I read this headline was of children dressed like a Dickens novel being minded by strict seeming Victorian ladies Perhaps chimney sweeping is no longer an acceptable part of the preschool curriculum...
Newspaper headline announces "Victorian daycare provider to close"...

I first thought of this as a Victorian era before going to Victoria, Australia

I had a wild interaction with a support chatbot this morning. It suggested a variety of helpful steps (which I'd already completed), and then suggested I open a chatbot and raise a specialist. I replied, am I not already in the support chat, isn't that your job to raise the specialist?

Thinking about the dry weather in Ireland... and that new Shannon-to-Dublin pipeline. 19 of the last 30 days where the flow in the Shannon has been at the legal minimum, so would be presumably no water available for the pipeline?
Table of water flow by days for the last 30 days, highlighted that over 2/3 are sitting at ~11 cubic metres per second, which is the minimum flow level for the old river bed from Parteen Weir

Simply put, this is a loophole that needs to be closed. Shops (even reputable shops), should not be selling illegal vehicles with a small disclaimer that they can only be used on private land, and never on public roads, footpaths or cycle paths
Price sign for an e-scooter in a reputable sctore, featuring a small print disclaimer which reads: eScooter law - not to be used on public roads, cyclepaths or pavements. Only on private land with the land owner's consent.

In 2023, @nature.com published 'Papers and patents are becoming less disruptive over time', receiving world-wide media attention. Our Matters Arising, published after a 32 month delay (more on that soon), shows that the reported decline can largely be attributed to dataset artefacts. 🧵
The average CD_5 index per year for Web of Science. The original Park et al. decline (top curve) becomes essentially flat (bottom curve) when removing papers with CD_5=1. Those papers largely correspond to dataset artefacts.

It's a niche thing, but if you read that story about moving a high voltage cable and Dobby's Grave, it's all rubbish. They always planned to tunnel under the beach, and in a different place to the grave, because the cable is going toward an existing power station

fascinatingly* the French news is translating "Count Binface" as « le Compte Tête-de-Poubelle » rather than « Visage-de-Poubelle) which is, in fairness, more accurate (his entire head is a bin, not just his face) typical British media not asking the important underlying questions * ta gueule
Screenshot from Le Parisien. A photo of Count Binface, a man in a sort of black Darth Vader suit but with a silvery grey cape and a bin on his head with eye slit and mouthhole.

Headline:
