The courts that forced Biden to retain this Trump policy are complicit here and this should be more ammunition to reform them root and branch.

California hasn't executed anyone since Schwarzenegger was in office. New York abolished it in 2004. New Mexico in 2009. The blue state record on this is pretty clear

If we had a liberal majority on SCOTUS any time in the last 40 years, there would not be a death penalty in this country. Read between the lines on every lib dissent since Gregg, and you know which way liberal jurisprudence was leaning on this

So when I was in law school, I spent a lot of time working for capital habeas attorneys. The general consensus among them was that, had Clinton won, they'd all be out of a job within a decade.

The only economic measure that I think you can fairly say has been made significantly worse is housing cost. But even on healthcare costs, which have ballooned, you have to measure that against insurance coverage gains.

Particularly true given that criminals are, in economic terms, likely to have very high discount rates on future costs and to view risk more favorably than the norm.

Problem then is that our boy would almost certainly throw away that treaty within the next few years. He couldn't help himself.

My absolute crank opinion is that Napoleon could have pulled it off. Win Waterloo before Blucher arrives, defeat him the next day, then defeat the other armies in detail as they invade. It wasn't a likely outcome, but it was possible, and then he negotiates a new treaty

I guess this is just sort of the logical endpoint of this administration’s commitment to fulfilling their supporters’s desire to vicariously consume violence done to other people.

Imagine gatekeeping who gets to play sports. It's games for children. It's playing with a toy ball out of doors. Go decide which children can play marbles or jacks, you genius. Push over someone running with a stick and hoop. You are a stupid person.

I know nothing about Bluey but my kid has apparently watched it. He'll ask me "What does Bluey say?" expecting an impression (which I'll do for Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, etc) and I'll just do Steve Irwin.

Righteous anger might be the most disfiguring. You tell someone that they can be cruel AND just, and then they do not limit their cruelty. They think the cruelty is the justice. That's such a profound error that it perverts everything it touches.

Hey, this is that “study” that was previously cancelled after outcry at how monstrously unethical it was. It’s sentencing the poorest kids on earth to die of completely preventable liver cancer for white antivaxxers’ curiosity. How a medical doctor could co-sign this atrocity is beyond me.

Historically, English people have conceived of themselves as a nation made up of multiple underlying foundational peoples: Angles/Saxons/Jutes, of course, but then also some unquantified Britonnic substrate alongside miscellaneous other immigrants

Laverne Cox, Hunter Schaefer, even Caitlin Jenner have more to do with this than any maximalist demands from activists, in the same way that the anti feminist backlash in the 80s had more to do with seeing women, generally, in positions of authority than it did Andrea Dworkin.

I don't think that the transphobes or even most people are really engaging with Trans activist movements or even descriptions of them. The moral panic is much more general than that, and I do think it relates primarily to visibility in society
