Really need tech reporters to stop being credulous to the “Our biggest weakness? Maybe our AI is TOO powerful.” It’s already fucking the economy and environment and being used to murder people in Palestine, but the ol “don’t look at the man behind the curtain” routine works on Tech journalists

For those you don't know how this works, when a video gets copyright claimed, 100% of its revenue starts going to the claimant. The only way for a claim to be automatically removed is to trim out the claimed clip, obviously bad if the clip has original narration over it. Songs have to be muted. -R
Yeah, fraudulent copyright claims are such second nature to us Youtubers that it's easy to forget that the average viewer only knows that UMG is a blight upon the universe. And quartz, of course

Siskel and Ebert used to just play three minutes uninterrupted of a movie and then talk about it. Now you and money you make goes to Universal or whatever because you used four seconds and a sound effect from Obsession in a video essay about them.

im inclined to agree with the techlords that AI is dangerous. again, not because it's alive but because they're insisting on putting it in positions where it can hurt people, leaving aside the promised jobpocalypse they're promising us. chimp with gun

"Why should my tax dollars go to giving houses to people who can't afford them?" Why should MY tax dollars should go to satisfying your desire to see desperate people living desperate lives? I'd rather save money and solve the problem, rather than spend money to exacerbate it.

Sometimes I'll do a quiz just 'cause it's trending, but it really didn't know what to do with a Canadian XD I grew up in Saskatchewan (north of Montana), but apparently I don't sound like a Montanan? The Hollywood influence makes sense, but Maine a little less so
Results of a US dialect quiz. A map of the US with regions colour-coded along a spectrum from red to blue, red being most linguistically similar to the quiz-taker, and blue being most different. My most similar cities are Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland (Maine). My most different cities are New Orleans, Dallas, and Houston.

When you're a kid, you think some people are just evil. Then you get older and realize everyone's the hero of their own story, no one is evil for evil's sake Then you get older still and realize no, some people truly are just gleefully, ontologically pure evil

People on Bluesky are mad about potentially being scammed out of five dollars by slaves while trying to help people again. A lot of malignancy towards not only those who ask but also for those who give. Assumptions that we don’t give in real life. You can just Not Participate and be done with it.

Surveillance is not intrinsically evil, I can conceive of a society where it's only used for good – but I think most extant governments & law enforcement agencies have proved they cannot be trusted with that power

Anyone else notice an alarming uptick in the amount of security guards in public spaces lately I'm talking malls, grocery stores, skytrain stations, out on the street. I've never seen them protect anyone, but I've seen them harass a lot of homeless people for 'loitering'

No longer content with pillaging intellectual work and dismembering our environment (already critically weakened), AI companies are now hellbent on destroying books galore including rare editions. Shut down these nefarious enterprises already.

AI labs buy, scan, shred millions of rare books
If you have retreated to physical books because the internet is too full of AI slop, bad news — now they’re shredding the books to feed their AI slop machines.

If Musk and his ilk were actually genuine about 'historical accuracy' and weren't just using it as code for 'what I saw on TV when I was 12,' then Odysseus would be dressed like this
Image of a suit of bronze age Mycenaean Greek armour. It looks a little silly to modern eyes, with a tube of polished bronze encircling the body down to the knees, a tall neck guard that covers the mouth, and a conical red & white striped hat

When I look at the coverage of AI vs. solar power, I remember this great bit from the webcomic Strong Female Protagonist about lightbulbs vs. batteries. It was a metaphor for types of people, but it's also quite literally true of tech
Illustration of a human pyramid, with regular people on the bottom and a few wealthy businessmen & socialites on top. There are text bubbles which read: "I grew up surrounded by battery people. People of unimaginable power, who spent their whole lives giving that power to those who used it to outshine them... We treat the things that soak up energy & resources like they're valuable, and the things that generate them like they're disposable. We don't celebrate batteries. And I think that's wrong."
