A significant part here is that it matters a lot *which* LLMs people are using. That the president is using the Nazi LLM made by Musk, which also generates CSAM, is materially different from other commercial models, but especially from models that we could audit and inspect. This could be regulated!

There is no moral equivalence between bullies and the bullied, between tyranny and democracy, or between brutality and decency. No individual can be free in a society devoid of justice. There can be no liberty where brutality reigns.

Another great find over the past year: USMobile. It’s a 1/3 the price we were paying on T-Mobile and covers every country I’ve been two without yet another payment.

NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV's Al encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah's team then privately lobbied the pope's advisers "to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously." Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing.

This is a better epilogue to my January story about the private equity firm profiting off of ICE's cruelest flights than I could have ever possibly hoped for. CHICAGO: You went to the mat and protected (at a minimum!) thousands of immigrants from torture. Take a bow. prospect.org/2026/10/02/i...

We’ll find out about apple. This was 2017 -2021. Went all foss at one point, from Linux to android alternatives and more. it would still be an issue for me today, right down to the fact my internet still isn’t much better.

Chris Wiegman @chriswiegman.com · 01/10/2026
Oh nice! I tried that. Went really deep actually. Our him internet, though, only could do about 10mb on the upload which killed the experiment. I’m too deep into apple these days, but at least they’re not the worst company and all my stuff actually works.

I get that. I pay for iCloud storage so I just use their email (it’s free if you pay for anything else on iCloud). My registrar is cloudflare because they all suck. I can’t get away from toxic tech, but at least I minimize the number of companies I deal with.

It’s a very minor point amongst the far greater injustices of the situation, but the Cornell case has also just reminded me how much all of society seems to have just accepted the fact that big tech won’t allow people to use the word “rape”. (Or at least people *believe* so — nobody knows!)

Agreed. I don't think anything really _can_ replicate Twitter (which I consider dead as X is a vastly different beast that just stole its IP) as it was the first and only for so long. We couldn't fragment the communities at the time. I guess this is progress though?

I confess I do miss my old Twitter account (not X). That really was a great community for what I do. A few current projects are showing me how many people I’ve lost touch with since it ended.

This whole “feature” is one of the best examples I’ve ever seen of “security theatre.” It does nothing to actually help the people it’s supposedly intended for and instead actively harms all of us who are subjected to it.

I haven’t been on it that long, first Mac was in 08 (though I had iPods a few years before that). It drives me nuts too. Honestly, I like the evolution and the change. They’ve been far better at it than Google too as their changes don’t continually replace entire products.
