🚨NEW: Erez Reuveni, the DOJ lawyer fired for his honesty in the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case, sends Congress a whistleblower letter detailing lawlessness at the DOJ around the CECOT deportations. He says Emil Bove told the DOJ to respond to likely court orders blocking flights with "fuck you."
Bove then made a remark concerning the possibility that a court order would enjoin those removals before they could be effectuated. Bove stated that DOJ would need to consider telling the courts "fuck you” and ignore any such court order. Mr. Reuveni perceived that others in the room looked stunned, and he observed awkward, nervous glances among people in the room. Silence overtook the room. Mr. Reuveni and others were quickly ushered out of the room. Notwithstanding Bove's directive, Mr. Reuveni left the meeting understanding that DOJ would tell DHS to follow all court orders.21 - Mr. Reuveni was stunned by Bove's statement because, to Mr. Reuveni's knowledge, no one in DOJ leadership - in any Administration – had ever suggested the Department ofJustice could blatantly ignore court orders, especially with a "fuck you.” Mr. Reuveni was in disbelief, because, on the contrary, the Department of Justice consistently advises its clients of their obligation to follow court orders, not to ignore them. Mr. Reuveni knew that it was absurd and unlawful to do otherwise, a proposition that Mr. Reuveni felt even more certain of after a brief conversation with his supervisor, August Flentje, shortly after the meeting.

Rep. Laurel Libby, R-Auburn, recently used my second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run, and that of my teammate in the 800-meter run, to malign Soren Stark-Chessa, the trans-identified athlete who finished first.

One of the reasons I chose to run cross-country and track is the community: Teammates cheering each other on, athletes from different schools coming together, and the fact that personal improvement is valued as much as, if not more than, the place we finish.

Last Friday, I ran the fastest 1,600-meter race I have ever run in middle school or high school track and earned varsity status by my school’s standards. I am extremely proud of the effort I put into the race and the time that I achieved. The fact that someone else finished in front of me didn’t diminish the happiness I felt after finishing that race. I don’t feel like first place was taken from me. Instead, I feel like a happy day was turned ugly by a bully who is using children to make political points.

We are all just kids trying to make our way through high school. Participating in sports is the highlight of high school for some kids. No one was harmed by Soren’s participation in the girls’ track meet, but we are all harmed by the hateful rhetoric of bullies, like Rep. Libby, who want to take sports away from some kids just because of who they are.

This is a remarkable letter and everyone should read it.
I can no longer, in good conscience, be a part of or lend any kind of support to what I see as increasingly strenuous efforts to comply with each and every immoral and often illegal directive being sent to the National Institutes of Health from the Executive Office of the President, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” (which, as of this writing, is not a duly enacted Department-level unit of the United States Government and does not have a duly appointed and confirmed Secretary-level administrator). Compliance with these directives violates my own morals and ethics and regularly requires me to contemplate behaviors that violate both my Physician’s Professional Oath and my Oath of Federal Service. Furthermore, I do not see those people best positioned to protect NIH and to protect biomedical research offering meaningful resistance or questioning any aspect of these directives in any detailed way. The most common response appears to be to comply as quickly and completely as possible, and to plan ahead for how to comply for any that may be on hold for the time being. I understand the reasons why this might be the position of those making the decisions for the agency, but understanding does not allow me to agree or to capitulate.

We worked for months with USAID to build an $85,000,000 project to end TB in two regions of the Philippines. The project is funded by private money, the Philippine government, and matching USAID funds. It could provide a blueprint for eliminating TB worldwide--except it's...not happening.
