Venezuela seems like less of a war or invasion than a Viking plundering campaign from the Middle Ages. They surprise attacked, they stole stuff, they killed some people, they kidnapped the king, they left. It’s medieval—which makes sense because we’re rewinding to before the Treaty of Westphalia.

We don’t even know who did this or why. We imagine that we can guess, but history is replete with examples of why even entirely logical guesses could be wrong. We should stop drawing conclusions until we have actual facts we can base them on.

I was briefed on the intelligence last week. Iran posed no imminent threat of attack to the United States. Iran was not close to building a deliverable nuclear weapon. The negotiations Israel scuttled with their strikes held the potential for success.
