It is the old story of the frog in the pot. If the heat is turned up slowly, the frog is cooked without even realizing what has happened.
I don't think people fully comprehend what is happening. We are being priced out of luxury. We are being priced out of normal. a house, car, groceries, childcare, insurance. These weren't extravagant expenses 20 years ago.

THE PARTS OF CHRONIC ILLNESS NO ONE PREPARES YOU FOR

It’s not just the symptoms.

— It’s the constant explaining.

— The second-guessing.

— The feeling of being “fine enough” for others... but not for life.

— It’s grieving the version of you that could do things without thinking.

— It’s learning to say no even when you want to say yes.

— It’s watching life move on while you’re focused on surviving the day.

— It’s being strong in ways no one can see.

This concept was introduced to me as "run the dishwasher twice" and was an important part of my executive functioning recovery as well as my path to self-acceptance.
When I was at one of my lowest (mental) points in life, I couldn't get out of bed some days. I had no energy or motivation and was barely getting by.

I had therapy once per week, and on this particular week I didn't have much to 'bring' to the session. He asked how my week was and I really had nothing to say.

'What are you struggling with?' he asked.

I gestured around me and said 'I dunno man. Life.'

Not satisfied with my answer, he said 'No, what exactly are you worried about right now? What feels overwhelming? When you go home after this session, what issue will be staring at you?'

I knew the answer, but it was so ridiculous that I didn't want to say it. I wanted to have something more substantial.
Something more profound.

But I didn't.

So I told him, 'Honestly? The dishes. It's stupid, I know, but the more I look at them the more I CAN'T do them because I'll have to scrub them before I put them in the dishwasher, because the dishwasher sucks, and I just can't stand and scrub the dishes.'

I felt like an idiot even saying it.

What kind of grown ass woman is undone by a stack of dishes? There are people out there with *actual* problems, and I'm whining to my therapist about dishes?

But he nodded in understanding and then said:

'RUN THE DISHWASHER TWICE.'I began to tell him that you're not supposed to, but he stopped me.

'Why the hell aren't you supposed to? If you don't want to scrub the dishes and your dishwasher sucks, run it twice. Run it three times, who cares?! Rules do not exist.'

It blew my mind in a way that I don't think I can properly express.

That day, I went home and tossed my smelly dishes haphazardly into the dishwasher and ran it three times.

I felt like I had conquered a dragon.

The next day, I took a shower lying down.

A few days later. I folded my laundry and put them wherever the fuck they fit.

There were no longer arbitrary rules I had to follow, and it gave me the freedom to make accomplishments again.

Now that I'm in a healthier place, I rinse off my dishes and put them in the dishwasher properly. I shower standing up. I sort my laundry.

But at a time when living was a struggle instead of a blessing, I learned an incredibly important lesson:

THERE ARE NO RULES. RUN THE DISHWASHER TWICE!!!"

@_philayana - This is your constant reminder that you don't see what chronically ill people are like behind closed doors. You often don't see the suffering, the pain, the not being able to shower for days because you're so exhausted. You see a put together, "pretending to be well" version of ourselves that we often use when we face the outside world, in an attempt to have a good time.

So many folks talk about how they’re being “forced to accept” things that go against their beliefs.

You’re not being forced to accept them.

If you have a problem with people of color, with gay marriage, with trans people, with immigrants, with women of any race, etc. then you’re still welcome to feel however you want to feel about those people. You’re just not allowed to make their lives harder because of your feelings. You’re not allowed to turn their daily lives into a battle ground.

No one is forcing you to “accept” a single thing. You’re just not being allowed to terrorize people.

Dear Amazon: these artificial shipping delays for those of us that don’t pay for Prime are getting to be outrageous. If you can get an item to a subscriber in two or less days, you can get it there to someone who doesn’t want to (or can’t!) subscribe in less than 10. It’s BS and everyone knows it. 🧵

Living with chronic illness becomes a constant trade-off.

If I shower, I might not cook.
If I go out, I might crash.
If I rest, I feel guilty.
If I don't, I pay for it later.

Every decision has a cost.
Most people just don't see it.
