My first never-to-see-the-light-of-day novel and my MFA thesis, had a Filipino male lead I wasn't born in the Philippines. Never been an actor, except reluctantly. Yet, my MFA professors insisted the lead was my self-insert. It happens a lot to us POC writers.

Writing "wisdom" I hate: WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW. This is the worst advice ever. It would be better if it was KNOW MORE SO YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT IT. Every good writer I know is constantly researching and getting new information and asking experts. It's a terrible bit of advice!
