Wetter streams showed inverted biomass pyramids built on detritivorous inverts, while arid streams hosted simpler food webs run by vertebrate herbivores. Those arid streams also happened to produce 2x the biomass production and turnover rates!

New paper out in Ecology from my time in Texas: we tracked secondary production (vertebrate and invertebrate!) in 9 streams spanning a sharp rainfall gradient over 3 years The headline is that rainfall acts as a master variable, reshaping how energy moves through aquatic food webs.

The U.S. Secretary of Defense just stated that—so far—the war with Iran has cost $37.5 billion dollars. That's since February. That same amount is how much the United States spent on planetary science from FY2013 through FY2026 inclusive. Thirteen years of planetary science or five months of war.
The Curiosity rover on Mars. At about $2.6 billion, it buys you about ten days of Iran war.

NSF's grantmaking is miserly when compared to recent years, but when compared it to the historical record, we see it's a radical break from the long-term consensus of investing in scientific innovation. grant-witness.us/posts/2026-0... #NSF 🧪

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

Ultimately, we saw metabolism dictated by physical stability, which mediated the biology in the reservoir. During calm conditions, floating cyanobacterial blooms caused GPP to rise, but increased ER when they were sent into deeper waters when stratification broke from high winds

Reservoirs in the Great Plains are dynamic systems that can host high primary productivity but are also influenced by strong abiotic forces (e.g., wind). These factors combine to create systems with ecosystem metabolism that can flip from auto to heterotrophy and back again across days

Within life sciences, ecology awards are almost back to 4% of total awards (similar to 2005-2011's annual shares). Great to see a little bounce back after last year's jumpscare, suggesting the government still wants to invest in ecology in SOME form, after cutting it seemingly everywhere else

As climate change reduces landscape-scale habitat availability for insects that colonize ephemeral wetlands, population-level shifts in large branchiopods will likely further shift ephemeral wetland ecosystem function from its historic state, which may have large impacts for migrating birds

Insect colonization didn't change which large branchiopod taxa were present, but it did affect their body size, abundance, and reproductive timing (and did so differently across different taxa!).
