Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

Originalism reminds me of Conservative Christians who invoke draconian Old Testament scriptures when they don't like something Jesus taught. Cherry picking something a Founder said once is like leaning on a single law in Leviticus while ignoring all the inconvenient OT scripture that Jesus quoted.

It is NOT about the $$$ !!! Shit. Haven't we figured out yet that it's about the *power*? If someone can control software that can easily destroy a continent + the rest of the world as collateral damage but still thinks "cool, let's do it cuz 🤪", then $$$ isn't really the problem.

Ugh. This is actually serious. The thing is, AI can only do the kind of mass destruction AI weirdos like Dario Amodei are warning about if someone tells it to. Apparently, our Sec of Defense wants to do exactly that. AI is not a threat. The psychotic idiots who control it are the existential threat.

Very unclear what this is, because the U.S. military…already has a robust chaplaincy corps? This has been true literally since the U.S. military was created 251 years ago — technically, before the U.S. even declared independence?

These ads go in the same category as brazen, easily disproven lies after ICE killings. It’s not about persuasion. It’s a display of power. They could have passed them off as PAC-funded. They added “paid for by the U.S. government” because they want us to know they can break the law with impunity.

In my Monday column I said that "at least two troops on the USS Lincoln" had attempted suicide. I guess the readers who take issue with my writing were right. I didn't get the correct number. (Link to my column in the first comment) www.ms.now/news/navy-di...
screen shot from my Monday column with this text: In August we learned that at least two troops on the USS Lincoln, who had faced the longest intense combat deployment in recent history, had attempted suicide. One sailor’s wife, Annabelle Loma, told The Guardian newspaper that her husband, who has served for 13 years, had tried to jump overboard. “He’s scared. He thinks he’ll get a dishonorable discharge.” Another spouse told the Guardian that her husband had saved the life of a fellow sailor who was about to jump overboard. At least one sailor who attempted suicide is facing discipline under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) Articles 83 (malingering) and 86 (absence without leave). The Navy refused to disclose how many personnel attempted suicide.

The Lincoln, badly rusted and in desperate need of repairs, just left the region. Many toilets didn’t work. There was often no hot water for showers. Drinking water was tainted. Food was severely rationed. Much of the ship was moldy. One spouse told officials that her husband had texted her saying that he “hopes he doesn’t wake up tomorrow.” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth claimed this was all “fake news” but senior officers later acknowledged that they were, in fact, having extreme difficulties getting any supplies to that ship. NSA Bahrain, it turns out, was a single point of failure for the entire region, with no backup plan.

There's a really important point in here: the term 'deportation' has become Newspeak. The correct term is "human trafficking" because what this regime is doing fits that description much more than the genteel ideas we hold about 'deportation.'

The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:
Erin Redwing
@realizingerin
I went to an rationalist/EA Al doomer event last night with the goal of meeting someone who could calmly explain to me the argument for how they get to the conclusion that Al will kill everyone.
Because these are rationalists, I expected to find people who could lay out a serious extinction pathway, walk through the assumptions and intermediate steps, identify choke points where negative pathways could potentially be regulated, and entertain disagreement about where their assumptions might break down.
My experience was the exact opposite.
The people I spoke to seemed psychologically unable to entertain the possibility that their conclusion (that Al literally kills everyone, which was a point that many would not even budge on) might be wrong.
Their most extreme conclusion was treated as an axiom.
I had multiple people walk out of conversations with me when I questioned their inevitable extinction premise.
At one point during a panel, the moderator asked everyone in the audience who was still skeptical of Al doom to raise their hands. About half the room did. He then told all of the skeptics to leave the panel and go with one of the speakers, who would answer their questions separately. They filtered out all the skeptics, and continued the panel only with the subset who accepted their extreme position.
I genuinely felt like a heretic just for questioning whether superintelligent Al inevitably leads to the extinction of humanity, or entertaining the possibility that the future might actually turn out well.
That does not mean Al safety is fake. Obviously there are serious questions about rapidly advancing Al systems and what happens as they become much more capable. Those are exactly the conversations I went there hoping to have.
But what I encountered was an apocalyptic death cult. These people are not rational. They are deeply afraid, they reinforce that fear in one another, and they have become so emotionally committed to apocalypse
