#Bioacoustics formed a big part of last week's Sutherland field trip. Students recorded birds on @openacousticdevices.info #Audiomoths (analysed with @chirpity-nocmig.bsky.social), used heterodyne bat detectors and set a PIPPYG by the digs - with Common Pipistrelles on both. @srucnews.bsky.social

100 nurdles (collected in about 20 mins) on North Shields Fish Quay beach just now. This beach was reasonably clear but still easy enough to collect these in a few minutes. I collected about 200 in all. It takes about 600 nurdles to make one single use small plastic water bottle.

1/ The world's songbirds sing in just 8 basic sounds. And where a bird lives decides which ones it uses. My first PhD paper is out now in @science.org (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aee6239) Here is what we found:

Ever since I started recording birds around our Wolverhampton garden I’m constantly surprised by what our Song Micro 2 picks up. Oysercatchers this time, going over at around 4 in the morning. I just couldn’t process this information without using the #Chirpity app, it’s brilliant. #nocmig
Image shows a sonogram generated by the Chirpity app from 24/7 recordings made on a Song Micro 2. The sonogram is of Oystercatchers calling in flight around 4 in the morning.

Blackcaps grace our #SpringArrivalSpotlight today, arriving from southern Europe in spring & singing until September. That said, Blackcaps are increasingly wintering in the UK too. Did you know? They're known as the 'northern Nightingale' for their delightful fluting song. 🎶

After attending a great webinar hosted by @wildlifeacoustics.com last week, we’ve trialled #nocmig using Chirpity. Fascinating results, with plenty of birds passing over, and being identified by their flight calls, including Siskins, Redwings and Hawfinches heading north @chirpity-nocmig.bsky.social
A spectrogram showing a downwards whistle, labelled Redwing.A spectrogram showing three high pitched downward whistles, labelled Eurasian Siskin.A spectrogram showing a sequence of high-pitched calls that go up in frequency, then drop sharply downwards, labelled Hawfinch call.A spectrogram showing a faint broadband call, labelled Grey Heron.

I'm grateful to @alexanderlees.bsky.social for sharing his experience with #Chirpity for #Nocmig. Chirpity features are designed to mitigate the shortcomings of AI classification. Import/Training new models based on your input/corrections is on the roadmap. But, note: this is hard to make easy!
