What I love about Western democracy is you can bung a political party £ 36 million earned from criminal activity & most media will continue to point at asylum seekers & migrant care workers with families as the barbarians at the gate we need to defend ourselves from 🙄.

Remarkable, long, period of elevated sea temperature for England's south coast this summer. Two months straight with temperatures well above 20C, shown here for a coastal buoy near Selsey Bill. Dipping now as the spring tides and higher wave heights mix in cooler waters.

Today's water-cooler fun facts: August 27th saw the 21st consecutive daily record global temperature, more than 1.80°C above the pre-industrial baseline, more than 4.35 standard deviations above the 1991-2020 daily mean, and more than 0.25°C above the previous daily record.

Thar she blows! Hull Maritime Museum resurfaces with a walk-in whale and a ‘monkey mermaid’
The £20m reboot shows off exhibits ranging from a giant whale skeleton to tiny ‘scrimshaws’ of carved bone to a very strange mermaid, all telling a gripping tale of a great seafaring city The star attraction of Hull’s revamped and revitalised Maritime Museum is a colossal 40ft-long skeleton of an North Atlantic right whale, beached more than a century ago. The remains of this leviathan dominate an exhibition space scarcely large enough to contain its stupendous bulk. Children can crawl into its ribcage, like junior Jonahs, popping up in a clear plastic dome as digital images of swimming whales slowly unspool across the ceiling. Docile, leisurely and extremely blubbery – which meant that harpooned carcasses conveniently floated, as well as yielding copious quantities of valuable oil – the North Atlantic right whale was hunted almost to extinction during the whaling era. Today, it’s estimated that there are fewer than 400 left. Continue reading...

Roasting! Heathrow recently reporting 35C (95F) just after 3pm this is 7th day this year in UK we have seen these temperatures. From 1977 to 1989 nowhere in UK saw 35C, if you omit 1976 you could go back to 1958. Over 30 consecutive years. Now it’s every other year….

Tonight we head out to measure sea temperatures off the Yorkshire coast. We'll start off Whitby in the early hours, where the water looks to be 16-17C at the surface, then work our way south through the cooler patch off the Holderness, to finish Friday evening in the warm water off the Humber.

What is the future of summers in England? Our choices matter. A high-emissions future will commit our children and grandchildren to live in a world where the summers of 1976 & 2025 are cold. A global net-zero emissions future means that we can stabilise the climate & those summers will be normal.
