Rain stopped right on cue for the annual rake up of cut vegetation on the Red Moss of Netherley path. After 10+ years of management, the Yellow-rattle is becoming increasingly dominant and @scotwildlife.bsky.social ranger, Lewis, had made short work of it with the brushcutter. #habitatmanagement

First troglodytian escapade this "winter". This Aberdeen culvert drew a blank last winter, but two #hibernatingheralds were in attendance today along with a Small Tortoiseshell.

Highlight in this morning's trap was VC94's first Light Brown Apple Moth. I'd found the firsts for VC45 (Pembrokeshire) and then VC69 (Westmorland) in the late 1990s. So I'm claiming a glorious/dubious [delete as applicable] 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 hat-trick. #teammoth

I don't make much effort with identifying #hoverflies, but this stunning one caught my eye in the moth trap this morning: 𝘚𝘤𝘢𝘦𝘷𝘢 𝘱𝘺𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪 - a migrant species. From search of other posts, seems to be quite a few around this summer. Portsoy (VC94 - Banffshire)

We struggle at Portsoy for small waders, so 12 Dunlin today was easily a record count. One Quail singing just east of town today, and 5 yesterday towards Whitehills, but barley harvesting has begun, so presumably that'll move some of them on. #birdingscotland #PWC2026

Still fins galore on Portsoy patch this weekend (2+ Minkes and a gang of Bottlenose Dolphins). Quiet birdwise, but a Bonxie showed nicely as it snacked on a young gull. And I liked this Corn Bunting pic - makes a change from sitting on a wire. #PWC2026 #BirdingScotland #seamammal #cetacean

Visits to the old patch, Blackdog, are infrequent so #patchticks there are a rare treat. On tonight's visit, haar twarted scoter scanning but a Red Kite that appeared out of the fog and quickly vanished back into it became a (long overdue) addition. #Scottishbirding
