QC election: the governing party won 0 seats. First Conservatives elected since 1935. PQ wins minority government but Liberals might have the popular vote. Maximum chaos. Best of luck to anyone trying to draw orderly conclusions from this; that’s not what we do here.

My recent media nostalgia is covering 1998-2003 or so... the time just before fatherhood / just before the turn of my career. My latest acquisition: IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, because I couldn't stop thinking about Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung after rewatching HERO.

Update on the Gambit/Mutant Massacre TPB cover nonsense... my brother tells me that at some point Gambit was retconned into the story as having recruiting the Marauders for Sinister.

"Dungeons!" book cover showing the exterior of the Tomb of Horrors, in a nighttime swamp, surrounded by red-eyed monsters. A group of stick-figure adventurers stands with a lantern preparing to enter the tomb

EMMA is far funnier, Emma more cheekily oblivious, and the narrator much sharper than I recalled from my first reading these 30ish years ago. But the age gap ick still holds, I'm afraid. (and now I want her to appear in the Austen Murder Mysteries by Tirzah Price)

Paperback edition of EMMA set on an orange couch. Features an orange teacup with a cameo and a blue plate.

Bought the most recent TPB of the original Shooter/Zeck SECRET WARS because I realized I don't have my original issues anymore. I can't say the Alex Ross cover is an improvement on the original (which is an unusual thing to say!)

Mike Zeck cover for MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS #10, featuring Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man, Human Torch, Nightcrawler, Captain Marvel, Storm, Colossus, Thing, Rogue, Hawkeye, She-Hulk, Cyclops, Wasp, Captain America and Wolverine in various action poses

Alex Ross painted cover of the original Secret Wars #1 cover, but the lighting and reflections are not at all to my taste

There's another way to decode this shelf, but that's a thread for another day!

010

Stephen Wark @chirographum.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

As it stands now, whatever is happening at Marvel/DC has passed me by, so I'm picking up a slice of Godzilla revival books. The kids are reading the Power Rangers line, the Absolute books, a lot of Flash, and the Berserk tomes as they come out. And they have full run of my TPB shelf and the boxes.

A rustic wooden shelf full of various comic trade paperbacks

110

Stephen Wark @chirographum.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

While the kids were young, I switched to Adventure Time, My Little Pony, Bravest Warriors, Regular Show and whatever kid TPBs they wanted. Then I'd watch them read each other's books on a Saturday afternoon and it was the best thing in the world.

100

Stephen Wark @chirographum.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

I kept my eyes open for every Magnus and Solar reboot on the market (and was never disappointed! Looking forward to Skybound's version), followed the early Valiant revival for a bit, and now pick up every Milestone book on the shelves.

100

Stephen Wark @chirographum.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

Eventually, my brother dropped his pull list, but I kept mine. I switched to Vertigo books, then went back to Marvel for the Heroes Return, found the earnest revival in Alan Moore's America's Best Comics, Kurt Busiek's Astro City, and then explored Boom Studios from the early Zombie/Cthulhu days.

100

Stephen Wark @chirographum.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

Can't forget the DC side, with Armageddon 2001 and the Death of Superman. But we were never strongly invested in DC books. As Marvel wanted in our interests, we shared the Milestone books, and I went all-in on the new Valiant universe.

100

Stephen Wark @chirographum.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

It was the era of yearly events (Mutant Massacre, Fall of the Mutants, Inferno, Acts of Vengeance) and Annual crossovers (Evolutionary War, Atlantis Attacks) and were hooked! Right until it all became too much to keep up with (and, for me, they gave Wolverine bone claws).

100

Stephen Wark @chirographum.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

We'd read our books in the car on the way home, and then trade books in the afternoon. Nothing like it in the world. We split titles to cover as much territory as possible: My brother took X-Men and X-Factor. I took New Mutants and Alpha Flight. And then we just kept going.

100

Stephen Wark @chirographum.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

And a year after that, we signed up for pull lists at Capitaine Quebec. Our dad would drive us to the store where he would buy the owners donuts and coffee and they would let us in early to spend our allowance on reserves and back issues to fill in the gaps of that box...and then beyond.

210

Stephen Wark @chirographum.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

That box, which also had some great Christopher Priest (as Jim Owsley) and Peter David Spidey books, inspired my brother to actually subscribe to comics direct from Marvel, and me to pay closer attention to the newsstands. My earliest Hulk issues all had the US price crossed out in black marker.
