Coming up in 2.5 hours: how can language revitalization continue when folks are away from their traditional territories? Come hear from Tamara Aisake about Rotuman language circles from the diaspora! Today, October 13, 10am Pacific - free and online: bit.ly/stories-from...
Title “Stories from the Heart: Community Language Projects from Ready to Revitalize”

Below is a photo of Tamara Aisake in red regalia holding a feather fan. Text to the right reads: “Tamara Aisake & Club Hugag'esea
Faeag Rotuam Ta (Rotuma, Fuji)
"Rotuman Language
Circles from the Diaspora"

Hugag'esea creates mentorships with elders and learners to create cultural workshop/projects with Fäeag Rotuam Ta. Groups then facilitate and share their gifts of knowledge with our diaspora community. Although our language is from Rotuma, Fiji, this project encourages language stewardship wherever in the world we are.”

Had one in my house growing up. We called him Alfred and he ate a bunch of other bugs and lived in a web in one corner. Way less scary than the one that ran up the gear stick in the car one time!

Wanna introduce Roman trade to your class 🌍? I’ve noted it before but 1 of the most engaged activities I do all year is to have students make budgets from a salary I give them & using prices from Diocletian’s Price Edict (301 CE). Then they have to figure out how to ship it using Orbis.Stanford.edu.

Do you think there's a way to combine it with the word-level bounding boxes that voynichese.com has? It has xml files with all the information about where the words are. However, the pages on the site are trimmed so lining them up might be hard

No, the AAU survey asks everyone. Men are also sexually assaulted, but at lower rates

Claire @chirila.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
This stat is in line with the AAU surveys. For undergrad women in that survey, the rate was 23%. That survey is widely held to have taken great care with validity measures and is still often felt to be an under report

Worth noting that some of these ideologies are empirically grounded and others are, like, not. So while this might be helpful in putting many players on the same stage, it doesn't do justice to the unequal epistemological credibility of the different stances nor the unequal political economy.

Just got around the watching the #Voynich = moonwater + menstrual blood TikTok and while I am all for the possibility of the manuscript having been written by women for women, the video's interpretation of the images really doesn't work.

Men came up with theories like microdot ciphers and aliens with astigmatism which are obviously stupid so obviously the sensible alternative is... Moon water algae?

oooh, ok - I was assuming they meant something like Hartlieb's Das Buch der verbotenen Künste, which was the inspiration for the idea that the rosette page represents 9 vaginas
010
Claire @chirila.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
that was a claim at one point, before the manuscript was carbon dated. For that to be true, we now know, the Voyniches would have had to anticipate what carbon dating could measure

We know what men do when they want to hide women's magic in book lore. They cut out bits from pages. They blacken over words. They burn the authors. They don't write it down in a unique writing system

Claire @chirila.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
The Voynich manuscript has a long history of interpretations based on confirmation bias, wishful thinking, and total fantasy. The fact that there are two separate theories of aliens learning Hebrew speaks for itself. This latest eruption is another. /rant

And you don't need live experience of menstruation to point out that menstrual cycles average 28 days, the lunar cycle is 28 days, but if you're comparing menstrual/lunar calendars to an illustration with *30* items, you can't count.
130
Claire @chirila.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
However (I'm sure people will correct me whether or not I'm wrong), no one here has the lived experience of being an early 15th century participant in esoterogenic manuscript production, of any gender.
110
Claire @chirila.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
the contribution of lived experience is often overlooked or only brought up in some contexts and it's important, not least because where there are consequences to academic work, it's often people with lived experience who are best able to assess that impact
120
Claire @chirila.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
ok last point: lived experience is important in academia because it helps you figure out where to look for answers, how to frame questions, and how to bring different knowledge and expertise into the picture. It's really important (as is being able to step outside one's own lived experience)

Claire @chirila.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
(And it's not just women saying sensible things about the Voynich Manuscript, but sex and gender essentialism are annoying and I have the same view of terf-interpretations as I do of the people who dump their Voynich AI buddy conversations in my inbox multiple times a week)
