Remember: Darwin's note of "I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything" was written on Oct 1 (1861). Thus we are free to celebrate Very Poorly And Very Stupid Hatred Day today.

Day 2 of the UCU workers' strike at the University of Edinburgh. The 1,800 jobs UCU estimates will be cut is unprecedented in Scottish higher education. It is happening in the wealthiest Scottish university, and the third richest in the UK, currently sitting with over £3billion reserves.

At the request of an editor: If you use tone numbers (rather than letters or diacritics) what is your preferred way to render them? A. Same size as segments, eg ma2na4 ‘maybe’ B. Superscript C. Something else If your answer is A, interested to know language family/area #linguistics

Amazing turn out from students and staff at the University of Edinburgh, in protest at senior management's greed and manufactured cuts. This is what solidarity looks like - as our campaign of industrial action begins this coming week in protest at the cuts. www.ucuedinburgh.org.uk/blog/student...

CoLang gave me way more hope for the future of linguistics - as a space that is relevant to Indigenous communities and as a source of knowledge - than I have had in a long time. Up there with the 2017 Natives4Linguistics LSA symposium (iykyk)

From @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social announcing access to a European developed LLM. This is the greatest perversion I could possibly imagine of the term data sovereignty. Yes, please use the European machine made of stolen data, not the American or Chinese one.

OMB commenting period ends today. That's not the end of the fight. UNIONS will pick up where individuals left off and work together to sue the federal government. In my organizing, people constantly ask me what unions can do for higher ed. They can do this. And universities won't. So sign a card.

hold onto your wallet anytime someone claims a human behavior is ‘natural’ without defining what that means, but *clutch* it for ‘x is natural, y is not, therefore ban y.’ truly natural behaviors - eg walking, using language - don’t require incentives, far less coercion

How do you distinguish *in spoken english* between ‘American’ = from the Americas and ‘American’ = from the USA? People write things like ‘USian’ but I’ve heard that actually get said maybe once ever, and ‘languages/etc of the Americas’ is a) wordy + b) implies indigeneity (not always intended)
