the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

It’s legally flawed because ”genocide” is the crime of intentionally destroying a *people*. In principle, a genocide could have zero killings. (e.g. mass sterilization, or—as Russia is doing in Ukraine—abducting children and raising them in your own culture.) This distinction was always intended…

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Just a reminder: Tillis persuaded the woman Hegseth allegedly raped to come forward with her story, and told her that if she did, it would sink the nomination. She did. At great risk to herself. Tillis then cast the deciding vote for Hegseth. Because he’s a goddamned coward.

I feel like people do not generally know when the last big bubonic plague outbreak was and how many people it killed (1855 in Yunnan, went worldwide, at least 15 million people, lasted for over a century.). There's a ton of apotropaic Chinese ritual from the period to ward it off.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

UAE officials have warned the UK government that the severity of Man City's punishment could undermine their appetite for future grand-scale commitments in Britain, according to people familiar with the matter
They consider the Premier League's actions to have an influence on the bilateral state relationship, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing undisclosed information
The extraordinary pressure comes after Andy Burnham faced criticism, including from within government, for saying Man City's Abu Dhabi owners should not be disqualified specifically because of the investment they bring to Britain

Immigration is mentioned 4 times in Burnham's conference speech. The first 3 repeat the idea that we "lost control" over immigration, or that control was "weakened", and the fourth says that we need to work with the EU on immigration. Nothing about the positives of immigration or immigrants' rights.

How is it free? Because the absence of tax and overheads allows a vast investor bubble, which will burst and cause a financial crisis like 2008, when we haven't even recovered from that yet. You think the far right came from nowhere? No, it came from a financial crisis. Which we are still in.

Meanwhile we undermine every attempt at controlling climate change, just so you can write a complaint to Tesco without having to think about punctuation. Which, let's face it, is what most of us use it for. It's basically free to use at that level.
