The degree to which none of them are asking whether they've corrected for post-Dobbs effect -- NOT EVEN in AZ where there's both a POTUS race and an abortion referendum -- is even more comforting.

Sometimes you will be in subcultures that stop checking your worst behaviors and even start encouraging them, and it feels like you’re doing something righteous, even good, but even if it feels good being validated in this way is not worth the cost You can do better

The absolute psychos who make the base of the GOP primaries think "Trump's ideas are popular", when it's actually "Trump says so much bullshit that everyone has stuff to agree with while easily dismissing everything else as hyperbole", so it's really hard to get a new Trump from that pool

And there have been a bunch of calls for insurrectionist protests since J6, like at Trump courthouses, and the militia cosplayers are like "if there might be actual consequences, we're not going"

which were basically "airline price war" unsustainable long term. 2, a ton of new consumer services were being run at a loss between 2010-2018, propped up by VC dollars, and it turns out a private burrito taxi costs a lot more when a private equity firm isn't paying for half the cost of every order

2 things that I don't see talked about: a bunch of cheap things had been stuck anchored at $1 and when that barrier broke, went up to $1.50-2 because they had basically been saving up inflation. Seeing a Twix jump from $1 to $1.80 at the checkstand is right in your face, same for Dollar Menus,

Not to be super shady to OP, but are they replacing the sacrificial anode in their water heater every year? I didn't even know that was a thing until a few years ago, when it was far too late to try and replace the one on my 20 year old tank. How much other maintenance am I accidentally not doing?

By way of my far-flung network of correspondents comes this piece of good news from the bad place twitter.com/keithboykin/...
The New York Times said yesterday that “Black Voters Drift from Democrats, Imperiling Harris’s Bid.” But today’s CBS News poll shows Kamala Harris getting the exact same numbers from Black voters that Biden got in 2020 (87%). And Biden won. Don’t obsess on the polls, folks. Just vote.

That was true a few years ago during the big shortages and production slump, but inventories have gone the other direction now and are back to pre-pandemic levels. We're seeing the return of dealer incentives that weren't there for the last 4 years, and MSRP pricing seems to be the usual right now

Americans have lots of money, and spend it on nice cars, though; $50k is solid luxury car territory. A new base F-150, most popular vehicle in America, does run $45k base, but you can grab a new Toyota Tacoma for $30k.
Screenshot from Edmunds.com showing price brackets for new cars. $30-40k gets you a Chrysler Pacifica, a Ford Mustang or a Kia Telluride, $40-50k buys a Ford F-150, a BMW 4 series, or a Mercedes-Benz A-Class, $50-60k buys a Mercedes-Benz GLC class, a Volvo V90, or a Lexus ES 300h, and $60-90k gets you a Chevrolet Corvette, a Lincoln Aviator, or a Porche 718 Boxter

The early 90's has 3-5% inflation, so that's a reasonable extrapolation, but at least where I'm at, a Big Mac meal is $10.50 (and a on-special double cheeseburger meal is $5), and having looked around for basic cars in the last year, those are $20-30k (a new Toyota Corolla is $23k)

Especially given the "if Trump doesn't like this report, he'll go find another vendor that will show him what he wants to see" dynamic that we know Trump demands

On the other hand, there's a pretty good incentive for a polling vendor for the Trump campaign specifically to only show things that can be spun to Trump as good news, at least if you want to keep getting paid to do more polls for Trump

Like, Occupy and the Tea Party took place at the same time, and Occupy definitely had more people out protesting! Meanwhile, the Tea Party took over local parties and has run the House of Representatives for the last decade. Not that that's the only factor by a mile, but it's still important!

I'm gonna bang this drum the rest of my life, but 60,000 Americans in body bags is what got the US out of Vietnam, and while protests are an important window into popular sentiment, the mythos that college protests were instrumental in stopping Vietnam has mostly hurt the left's effectiveness
