Christmas greeting from the rector of Leipzig University is nothing but cynical. I don't know if I see this “ongoing phase [of consolidation] as an opportunity”, now that my contract has expired, my supervisor has no money left for even a single WiMi position, but teaching still has to be done.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque: "This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".
Bronze plaque saying "A Letter to the Future. Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier. In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it. August 2019. 415ppm CO2"

This is excellent journalism, I.e. confronting interviewees with facts, but it also shows the problems with having honest conversations/interviews with bad-faith actors. Stop giving them air to lie!

The Trumpist regime isn’t supporting the AfD out of opportunism. MAGA is siding with the AfD *because* it is a rightwing extremist party - *because* it is aiming to bring liberal democracy down in Germany. That is the shared goal; liberal democracy is the shared enemy.
