González’s double inspires Spain to emphatic Euro 2025 win over Portugal
The minute’s silence was immaculate, poignant, loaded, and ultimately broke into applause. “Rest in piece Diogo Jota,” spelled a series of cards held up behind Inês Pereira’s goal; the air was thick with emotion in those moments and one of the first things to say is that Portugal’s players deserve the highest admiration for turning out to compete. They may not have shared a dressing room with Jota or his equally mourned brother, André Silva, but that cannot minimise the fact two members of their nation’s close-knit footballing family had been taken away in devastating circumstances. It took guts and no little honour to show up and keep running, scrapping, hunting for moments to take pride in while Spain set about reaffirming their status as runaway favourites for this competition. Spain themselves deserve credit for resisting any temptation to go easy, starting at a rattling pace and completing a thoroughly professional job. In their case that often means administering a sound beating and there is no escaping that they delivered one here. Continue reading...

I’ve had the privilege of playing on the same team as Emily several times over the years. She is kind, brave, and deserves the world. We should call the ban out for what it is: the FA is banning trans kids from playing grassroots sports with their friends. It’s not about protecting women at all.

A Guatemalan woman who gave birth in Tucson on Wednesday — days after entering Arizona through the desert and getting arrested by border agents — is facing rapid deportation proceedings under Trump's "expedited removal" policy, which could put her and her baby's health and safety at risk, according to an immigration attorney.

But Department of Homeland Security officers, who are posted outside the woman's Tucson Medical Center hospital room, are refusing to let the new mother speak to a lawyer, as she's requested, the Tucson attorney, Luis Campos, told the Arizona Daily Star on Thursday.

After days walking through the Southern Arizona desert, the woman was apprehended by Border Patrol earlier this week and put into detention, until agents transported her to the hospital to give birth on Wednesday, Campos said.

TRUK United Statement on FA’s Ban on Transgender Women in Football from Age 13
Everyone at TRUK United is deeply disappointed and outraged by the decision announced today by the Football Association (FA) to ban Transgender Women from participating in women's football from the age of 13.
For many years, the FA had stringent and carefully considered policies in place regarding the inclusion of trans women in the women’s game. These policies involved strict eligibility criteria, including hormone level monitoring, and we supported the processes that were implemented. Under those guidelines, trans women were able to play without incident. They were welcomed by teammates, coaches and supporters, becoming valued members of their clubs and making a positive contribution to the sport.
Importantly, there has been no football-specific evidence to suggest that, under the previous policies, trans women posed a risk to fairness or safety. Scientific research has shown that trans women who have undergone hormone therapy do not possess any significant performance advantage over cis women.
Being allowed to play football has had an overwhelmingly positive impact on the physical and mental health of many trans women. We know of numerous individuals who have found not only joy in the game but also friendship, community and purpose through their involvement in their clubs. To have that taken away so suddenly, without meaningful consultation or justification, is devastating.
The FA frequently promotes the idea of “Football for All”, but this decision stands in direct contradiction to that principle. By excluding an entire group based on their gender identity, the FA isolates itself from the growing number of football associations internationally that continue to welcome trans women in the game.
We are also seriously concerned about the wider repercussions of this decision. Already, we are seeing an increase in transphobic abuse across social media platforms. Decisions like this embolden…
