This reads to me like Canada is dropping all tariffs on Chinese-made solar panels. If that is the case we should push to roll out large-scale domestic solar ASAP paired with variable hydro generation acting as a solar battery. H/t @isaiahbishop.bsky.social decisions.citt-tcce.gc.ca/citt-tcce/a/...

I feel like the trivial complaints of affluent NIMBY homeowners get more coverage than the stories of people literally left homeless by the housing crisis generations of restrictive zoning rules have created

I am increasingly convinced that in order to prevent societal back-sliding into antivax / “natural is always healthier” nonsense, we need to reform the education system to teach children the pre-1950 world was often lethal to kids & modern food safety & medical practices are borderline miraculous.

This piece is bang on that Canada & the prov’s should deem most EU building standards satisfactory ASAP. My retired in-laws in Portugal have a cheap & cheerful elevator serving their single-stair lowrise apartment which is impossible in Canada due to our use of restrictive & expensive US standards.

Interesting new study which finds most of the US government debt/GDP reduction after WW2 (1946 to 1973) was due to ~inflating away the debt rather than it being reduced by growth or primary surpluses. Suggests bond markets have good reason to demand higher prices to lend to high deficit US govt.

There's a concept in international relations, specifically power transition theory, called a "revisionist state." Basically, the idea is that a revisionist state will tear down the whole international state system because they think it's unfair to them personally. Sound familiar?

Some clever scheming here about putting the Windsor-side access road to the Ambassador Bridge on a road diet, with reduced lanes and other changes, purely for urbanism and quality of life reasons, of course, and not at all to afflict the noxious bridge owners or their political pawns

Nice to see the govt investing more in passenger rail. Together with 45 locomotives recently announced, these 300+ coaches mean a $6.3 billion investment in Canadian production of Via’s new long-distance fleet. Via’s 2018 purchase of 32 locos & 160 coaches for $989m were all made in Sacramento.

Intermittent platform edge fences, at an estimated cost of $2 million per station, have begun to be installed on the TTC - A poor substitute for full platform edge doors, and more or less a waste of money, but hopefully the start of a longer process to finally procure affordable platform edge doors.

The lung health of children in London showed big improvements after auto emissions controls were tightened. Remember this when politicians propose only allowing new housing be built near busy pollution-heavy highways or arterial roads. Kids in apartments deserve cleaner air & quiet homes too.

I agree with Dr. Moffatt that we should experiment with letting parents exercise proxy votes for their kids. The Charter affords all Canadians the right to vote, and earlier restrictions on prisoners’ voting were struck down. Surely at least some kids - even just teens - also deserve to vote.

Based on these updated stats, if Canada had the same prime age employment rate as the US (80.4% vs 83.9% in Canada) an additional ~587,000 Canadians aged 25 to 54 would NOT be working. In other words, despite the US tariffs, the 🇨🇦 job market is healthier than the 🇺🇸 job market. Stay strong Canada.
