She is in effect seizing the property rights of homeowners/developers who wish to re-develop their lots and build affordable housing — many of whom relied on the updated zoning laws on the books — without compensation and transferring that value to local NIMBYs grumpy about young couples moving in.

Ah yes, when the so-called free-market conservatives impose stifling zoning rules to prevent people using their own property to build affordable homes, all in the interests of arbitrary aesthetic building standards dictated by the party

Unreal that the same Alberta govt — whose main grievance is that a higher order of govt has imposed stifling regulation without their consent restricted their ability to make use of their land/resources — is doing this. Maybe let the voters of Edmonton decide how to regulate their own land use?

Ontario should follow Norway’s lead and ban smart glasses as widely as possible - there’s simply no benefit to surreptitious recording in public worth the cost to vulnerable people

Anyone who thinks the Smith government would not sabotage a hugely successful experiment in deregulation which had led to an investment boom creating more affordability for consumers need only look at their spiteful arbitrary regulation of green energy

Hard to avoid the conclusion that the Toronto police simply don’t see it as their job to enforce traffic laws. Even their vaunted vision zero team gave out only ~40 speeding tickets a day on average in 2025. Absolutely not at level needed to address unsafe driving plague bsky.app/profile/grap...

Once again, for the politicians, business leaders, and journalists still actively posting on X/Twitter: why? You're using a platform that's owned by someone who's trying to break up your country. The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

I’m not talking about removing drop off zones (most of which are on the side streets at rear) - only that the on-street parking on University should go and a bike/EMS lane should stay. The hospitals have huge parkades on Murray and Elizabeth for anyone driving themselves who needs to park close by.

Amazing how much support high speed rail has despite significant cost and slow timing. People want more transportation options! It would be great if Via Rail could get started on upgrades before 2035 or later - they can quickly add new routes in Atlantic or Western Canada, and improve the corridor.

Parking lanes on arterials are probably the lowest value use of this public roadway. On University Avenue there are only ~100 on street parking spots between College & Queen, compared with ~5,000+ public parking spots in nearby garages. Remove parking, keep a lane for bikes & first responders
University Ave looking north from Dundas, with one lane in each direction mainly blocked off for permanent parking spots

Imagine speed limits were temporarily reduced to 10 or 20km/hour on arterial road due to poor road conditions - we would never hear the end of it Yet when it’s the subway used by 1+ million people a day, crickets

I had proposed to Alto they make use of existing (partly unused) CP rights and then tunnel east-west under Rene Levesque through ~6km of the downtown, as per this image. Could form the trunk of a fairly cheap regional express metro system. Happy to chat further if you like!

Chad Leddy @chadleddy.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
It would be wonderful if the Alto tunnel/right of way to access the city centre could be leveraged to provide a trunk route for a second REM type service (or a electrified regional express train) from the west island to the east end and then towards Laval. It need not use the same REM funding model.

Increasing leisure is laudable but as Keynes astutely predicted, it remains a permanent problem of human existence how to live wisely & well when freed from pressing economic need & work. Unfortunately, enormous wealth and leisure does not seem to prevent widespread intellectual & moral regression.

A perfectly good road to rip up and build a cut and cover tunnel to serve both Alto and a REM 2.0 running from Hudson to Terrebonne

This reads to me like Canada is dropping all tariffs on Chinese-made solar panels. If that is the case we should push to roll out large-scale domestic solar ASAP paired with variable hydro generation acting as a solar battery. H/t @isaiahbishop.bsky.social decisions.citt-tcce.gc.ca/citt-tcce/a/...

I feel like the trivial complaints of affluent NIMBY homeowners get more coverage than the stories of people literally left homeless by the housing crisis generations of restrictive zoning rules have created

Fairly comparing budgets from 2011 vs 2026 means considering spending per resident, after inflation. The 2011 budget was $9.39b. Divided by 2.6m ppl = $3,591 per resident. Adjust for inflation to 2026, that’s $5,068 per resident. The 2026 $16.6b budget split by ~3.3m people = $5,033 per resident.

The rents did not in fact skyrocket lol. Also imagine thinking “collapsing property values” - as measured from the very tippy-top of an historic bubble - are or should be of concern for the median voter. C’mon man. We need a better class of elites who feel shame about being demonstrably wrong.

Given that the City’s overall operating budget for 2026 is $16.6b, this suggest that the City’s per capita inflation-adjusted operating budget (excluding rate-supported items like water or garbage collection) is very close to being steady over 15 years, and may have actually gone down.

Chad Leddy @chadleddy.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
According the Bank of Canada’s inflation calculator, $9.6b in 2011 dollars would be worth $13.3b in 2026. The City’s population grew from 2.6m in 2011 to ~3.3 million in 2025, a growth rate of ~26%. Adjusted for pop. growth, the inflation adjusted 2011 spend would be ~$16.8b at current population.

Remarkably one of the two Lausanne metro lines is mainly single track. Would love to see a Canadian metro try this with modest sized automated light metro and see how cheaply it could be done.

At a minimum we need some kind of equal time rule where every NIMBY quote from an affluent older homeowner is balanced by a quote from a 29 year old with brutal housing options being forced to consider a super commute to afford a place with a second bedroom

It remains a structural problem that the (perceived) losers of intensification get quoted complaining, but the people or families benefiting from new housing (not being there yet) are left voiceless. Would love to see a follow-up to this piece in 3 or 4 years with quotes from happy new neighbours.

The Ontario line should help reduce crowding but given how much development is on Yonge itself, the ultimate answer is a Yonge express line (on the 🇨🇳 regional metro model) with stops at only key transfer hubs like Union, Queen, Bloor, Eglinton & Sheppard. Would add speed & resilience to the network.

Sure but they could save that money by building the missing link instead. Is there some technical reason they can’t just build that or is it just typical cooperation issues?
010
Chad Leddy @chadleddy.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I’m not saying you can’t build a line that long, just that a regional express would make more sense over those distances. There’s an underused rail corridor that would do the trick if anyone in government could get around to doing a build and swap with CPKC.
