The Music in the Woods Summer Festival is a free, one-day event celebrating community through music, culture, and local talent. Set by the riverside near the Roy Hobbs Community Centre, the festival features diverse performances, children’s activities, and local food.

Teaching Kids About Invasive Plants this Summer By Emma Marshall, CGOWCA Environment Committee Summer break is here and it’s time to send the kids out for our few warm months. While exploring this summer, consider how children may have the opportunity to discover our lovely neighborhood a bit differently. Invasive species are a local issue, and children and families can play a meaningful role in learning about and addressing these issues.

It is a beautiful day and I was craving Indian food so I decided to ride to Hidden Taste for their lunch menu, which is good even though I wished the lamb curry plate had some vegetables (they are not a sponsor so I can say whatever I want). Before now, you may not have known that there is a local organization who has been dedicated to protecting our Ottawa River. If so, let me introduce you to The Ottawa Riverkeeper: a charitable organization that has been advocating, educating, and ensuring the Ottawa River watershed is swimmable, drinkable, and fishable since 2001. The Ottawa Riverkeeper (OR) is an organization made up of 16 team members, including Convent Glen’s own, Laura Reinsborough, who is Riverkeeper and CEO.

I was looking through comments on the community association Facebook group, and I wanted to address some comments. There are a number of people who seem to be of my parents’generation who have a vision of a quaint Orléans that was idyllic to raise a family. I thought it would be good to reflect on growing up in the suburbs. Was Orléans in the 80s and 90s indeed a great place to grow up, and, if it was, are the elements that made it so still present today.

The community association has been contacted to discuss establishing or re-establishing neighbourhood watches as part of the city of Ottawa’s Neighbourhood Watch program. As a board, we are looking into it, but wondering if this is a solution in search of a problem. We took a look at the crime rates in our community to see how it compares to other areas, explore other options to increase the safety of our community and get feedback on how we should proceed.

I have been immersed in learning the new program, as I have never been involved at that level as an adult and have been out of the Scouts for a long time. I have been tangentially aware of the problems our kids face as a father of two kids (3 and 7), but I have not taken a deep dive into those issues until now.

Over the Summer, I became a Neighbourhood Leader with Hidden Harvest (more on them below!). I’d participated in harvests with them before and enjoyed how accessible they were.
