Cigarette packets have a cancer warning - why not alcohol or unhealthy food? Our research found that while the majority of people in HNY know that smoking causes cancer, less than 40% know that alcohol & obesity also cause cancer. People deserve clear information to make informed choices.

In our region, 45% of people think the food environment is the main contributing factor to obesity. Reducing the impact of marketing remains a key priority for the CfE & @oha-updates.bsky.social. The growing exposure of children to junk food adverts is a concern & a driver of rising obesity rates.

It’s positive to see the progress that is being made to tackle smoking in pregnancy across HNY, with smoking at the time of delivery rates at an all-time low of 5%. Amy from Hull quit smoking alongside her partner, to make sure her baby doesn’t grow up in a smoking household like she did.

Our research shows that 78% of people in Humber and North Yorkshire agree that alcohol labels should carry health warnings. While we’re used to seeing information and warnings on food and tobacco, alcohol remains a major exception. But the public's message is clear: we have a right to know.

Maintaining a healthy weight is not simply about willpower, but about navigating a system that encourages overconsumption. Every day, price promotions, advertising and product placement lead us towards high fat, salt and sugar options, shaping what feels normal.

The link between stress, mental health, and the coping mechanisms people turn to can see an increase in the consumption of alcohol, smoking & unhealthy food. When stress becomes chronic & mental health is strained, people find ways to 'cope’ that provide short-term relief but long-term harm.

Tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy food and drink remain the 3 leading causes of ill health across Y&H. Many of us know they’re harmful, but what’s often overlooked is how these harms overlap. When more than one of these products is involved, the impact on health doesn’t just add up - it multiplies.
