Relative to overall inflation, some of the food and drink categories that saw big price increases in 2022/23 (hello butter) have started to come back down slightly. Alcohol, meanwhile, remains cheaper in real terms now than in January 2021 and prices have effectively fallen throughout 2026.

Infographic titled "Are shoppers paying a premium for alcohol-free beer?" by SARG, published in Addiction. It shows that while no/lo beer is priced 19% cheaper on average than regular strength beer on the shelf, shoppers end up paying 7% more on average at the checkout. Reasons shown are Multipack Savings (53% of standard beer is in large multipacks saving ~30%, while no/lo is only in smaller packs saving 12%) and Premium Positioning (lack of budget or store-brand alternatives). Highlights impacts on Health Inequality, Value Perception, and Policy Options. Research led by Dr Abi Stevely for the NIHR-funded No/Lo Project. Full paper link: sarg-sheffield.ac.uk/stevely-nolo
