Cigarette packets have a cancer warning - why not alcohol or unhealthy food? Our research found that while the majority of people in HNY know that smoking causes cancer, less than 40% know that alcohol & obesity also cause cancer. People deserve clear information to make informed choices.

In our region, 45% of people think the food environment is the main contributing factor to obesity. Reducing the impact of marketing remains a key priority for the CfE & @oha-updates.bsky.social. The growing exposure of children to junk food adverts is a concern & a driver of rising obesity rates.

Our research shows that 78% of people in Humber and North Yorkshire agree that alcohol labels should carry health warnings. While we’re used to seeing information and warnings on food and tobacco, alcohol remains a major exception. But the public's message is clear: we have a right to know.

Alcohol has never been more available - or more affordable. Alcohol is now available at the tap of a button, delivered in as little as 30 minutes, and often accessible 24 hours a day through online platforms. alcoholchange.org.uk/get-involved...

Maintaining a healthy weight is not simply about willpower, but about navigating a system that encourages overconsumption. Every day, price promotions, advertising and product placement lead us towards high fat, salt and sugar options, shaping what feels normal.

The link between stress, mental health, and the coping mechanisms people turn to can see an increase in the consumption of alcohol, smoking & unhealthy food. When stress becomes chronic & mental health is strained, people find ways to 'cope’ that provide short-term relief but long-term harm.

In Y&H region, almost 40% of year 6 children are classed as overweight or obese - higher than national average. Making it easier for children to access healthy food through more nutritious school meals could help to support a more balanced diet. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy food and drink remain the 3 leading causes of ill health across Y&H. Many of us know they’re harmful, but what’s often overlooked is how these harms overlap. When more than one of these products is involved, the impact on health doesn’t just add up - it multiplies.

As we prepare to launch our stop smoking campaign, we’re reminded of the power of a shared vision to tackle the three biggest drivers of preventable ill health. Too many lives are lost by tobacco, alcohol and obesity. The greatest harm is experienced in our most disadvantaged communities.

Obesity is a key driver of health inequalities in our region resulting in reduced life expectancy and illness. Our research found that 73% of people in NYH support measures like clearer nutritional labelling. We need a clear strategy to tackle obesity and the unhealthy food that drives it.

Our research shows that although 90% of people in HNY know that smoking causes cancer, awareness of other smoking-related harms like pregnancy complications and dementia is low. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill is a landmark piece of legislation which will phase out tobacco for the next generation.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which is in the final stages of approval within the House of Lords, sets out that there is just one year to go until the Smokefree Legislation age-of-sale law takes effect. We’re urging retailers and partners to prepare for a change that will bring long-term benefits.
