The Conservative party recently announced proposals to change the benefit system so that recipients could not use their welfare payments to buy tobacco. Our new blog explains why the best solution is targeted quit support & access to free alternatives for those on low incomes and benefits. 👇

As the UK marks 100 days until the Smokefree Generation law, new data from @ashorguk.bsky.social shows that 6 in 10 young people who have ever smoked regret it. Smoking remains a leading preventable cause of heart attacks and strokes, causing tens of thousands of deaths each year in the UK.

Today is 100 days until the smoke-free generation comes into force on 1st January 2027, and new data from ASH shows that 62% of 11–17-year-olds who have ever smoked say that, if they could go back in time, they would not start smoking. 📆🚭

Whilst vapes are an effective smoking cessation tool for adult smokers, they should not be used by children or young people. Yet, they are being displayed in plain view of children, with bright and colourful packaging.

There's been media attention today about a review by RCPCH highlighting evidence on vaping & the risks it poses to young people. On BBC Breakfast, ASH Deputy CE Caroline Cerny said young people shouldn't use vapes. However, it's important that vapes are accessible for adult smokers who want to quit.

@marykfoymp.bsky.social is right, we need to make sure that dodgy shops no longer operate on high streets as their existence fuels harm misperceptions. However, there is a balance to be struck and we need to make sure that vape shops that ARE supporting smokers to quit can continue to do so.

Peter Lamb MP @delivering4crawley.bsky.social is absolutely right- the Government is taking action to reduce the appeal of vapes to children- something which is long overdue. But, as he says, a balance must be struck to make sure that vapes remain available for adult smokers who want to quit.

ASH data shows that in 2026, 75% of young people who are aware of vaping products reported that they had seen promotion for vapes. 👀This is up from 56% in 2022. 📈 The Govt are currently consulting on measures to reduce the appeal of vapes to young people, by restricting their packaging and display.

ICYMI - Analysis from ASH shows that smoking pushes 417,000 households in the UK into poverty, including 137,000 children. That's why our report calls on the Government to publish a roadmap to a smokefree country with clear goals to bring smoking below 1% across all population groups.
