I feel like as an executive if you make a statement like this, you have to then ritually disembowel yourself in front of shareholders.
A Guardian headline reading: "Coles blames competitor's Ooshies for slowing sales; young people the first generation to earn less than their parents at the same age."

The provincial bourgeois is rather like a hippopotamus, in that his placid nature and slightly ridiculous physical form tends to blind you to the fact that this is a very well adapted and extremely dangerous animal, who only seems harmless because he usually gets whatever he wants.

“They are the cathedrals of our secular era. They are high among the great accomplishments of our civilization.” Love this @charlescmann.bsky.social ode to the power grid, the public water system, the food supply chain, and the public health system: www.thenewatlantis.com/publications...
We, too, do not have the luxury of ignorance. Our systems serve us well for the most part. But they will need to be revamped for and by the next generation — the generation of the young people at the rehearsal dinner — to accommodate our rising population, technological progress, increasing affluence, and climate change.

The great European cathedrals were built over generations by thousands of people and sustained entire communities. Similarly, the electric grid, the public-water supply, the food-distribution network, and the public-health system took the collective labor of thousands of people over many decades. They are the cathedrals of our secular era. They are high among the great accomplishments of our civilization. But they don’t inspire bestselling novels or blockbuster films. No poets celebrate the sewage treatment plants that prevent them from dying of dysentery. Like almost everyone else, they rarely note the existence of the systems around them, let alone understand how they work.

Plugged into Europe! 🔌 The Baltics 🇪🇪 🇱🇻 🇱🇹 have disconnected from the Russian power grid and fully synchronised with the 🇪🇺 continental one, marking their energy independence. After two decades of preparation, it is now time to benefit from our common energy system.
The map displays the Baltic Sea region with a dark blue background representing the sea and lighter blue areas showing landmasses of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The title "PLUGGED INTO EUROPE" is prominently featured in white text at the centre with country flags above. Thin blue lines illustrate energy infrastructure, while icons in yellow and red denote specific locations. Administrative boundaries are outlined in subtle contrast, with a European Commission logo in the bottom right corner.

“Penguin-shaped silver plated cocktail shaker/jug w/ hinged beak as pourer, wings to side, S-shape handle & claw base.
Designed by Emile Arthur Schuelke (1901–86), an art deco penguin cocktail shaker was first produced for the Napier Co. in Sept. 1936. This special edition for the NY World’s Fair, complete with octagonal blue emblem on the penguin’s head, may have been produced to complement an exhibit called Admiral Byrd’s Penguin Island. aking its name from the American explorer Rear Admiral Richard Byrd Jr (1888–1957), who had made several expeditions to Antarctica, Penguin Island featured 50 live penguins, the largest number ever shown. longside them was Byrd’s personal team of 5 Huskies, born and reared at Little America, Antarctica; & Advance Base, the hut in which Byrd had stayed during his most recent expedition to Antarctica in 1934–5.
Probably acquired by King George VI & Queen Elizabeth during their visit to the Fair on 10 June 1939, as part of their US/Canada tour.”

WEM stats — week ending 15 December: WEM generation by technology • Rooftop Solar: 21.3% • Utility Solar: 2.7% • Wind: 13.5% • Battery Discharge 1.2% (0.6% Ren.) • Gas: 34.7% • Coal: 26.5% • Distillate: 0.1% Renewable contribution to demand: • WA: 38.1% 🔌💡
Chart of electricity generation in the South West Interconnected System from the 9th to the 15th of December 2024. Black coal ran at 200 to 1350 megawatts with lower output in the middle of the day due to rooftop solar. Gas more or less followed demand, peaked at 600 to 2200 megawatts in the evening and dropped to between 300 and 1100 megawatts in the mid morning. Wind had variable output during the week providing between 30 and 900 megawatts with lower output on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Rooftop solar peaked at 1700 to 2200 megawatts and followed a typical profile on days without cloud cover. Utility solar peaked at 190 megawatts during the day and had an interrupted profile due to cloud cover and low grid demand. Battery discharge peaked at 120 to 375 megawatts during the morning and evening. Distillate peaked at 10 to 120 megawatts.

reminded of this, on the terrifying psychological consequences of understanding how an organisation actually works ferd.ca/notes/paper-...
The realization that social worlds do not have an independent, stable existence but instead emerge from our collective action is “sometimes arrived at in a moment of heady delight, but often as a horrifying realization”. This realization is considered a “fatal insight” because it destroys assumptions that the current order, roles, rules, and routines are given. Within the system of roles, rules, and routines, there is far more room to maneuver than previously assumed. Rejection of objectivity puts possibility, perhaps even responsibility, squarely in the court of subjectivity.
