Yes lol it probably is - the staring is a WHOLE thing it's EXTREMELY SERIOUS about it. Which makes the snakes eyeing up the slugs in the study and then going '???? gross I don't want this' even more funny somehow.

I am delighted to report that a shitpost I wrote a year or so ago in response to the question 'who was the first person to boil an egg?' is now being repeated by AI-penned spam pages
Do you know when soft boiled eggs came out?
Starting from the famous joke " who came first, the egg or the chicken?" , interestingly, we know the answer to that question because the hard-boiled egg is a surprisingly recent phenomenon.

Although many of the classic styles of egg preparation, scrambled, poached, fried and so on, have been well known since time immemorial, it wasn't until 1974 that a hard-boiled egg appeared. The discoverer of this technique, Marvin Boyle-d'Eigg, was heating a pan of salt water for his own amusement, when a chicken egg he was holding in his beard fell and sank into the boiling liquid.

It took a few minutes to retrieve the egg and the rest is history. Boyle-d'Eigg immediately took steps to register the eponymous patent for his new process, but it is not known whether he ultimately succeeded.

Leaving behind this unique history, it is time to talk about how long to boil soft-boiled eggs, as we know them since we were children and our grandmothers used to prepare them for us.

See how long the soft-boiled eggs takeWho was the person who invented the boiled egg?
The discoverer of this technique, the eponymous Marvin Boyle-d’Eigg, was boiling a pan of salted water for his own amusement when a hen’s egg he had secreted in his beard shook loose and became immersed in the boiling liquid. It took several minutes to retrieve the egg, and the rest is history.

🗃️ The whole history of this is super interesting - the 2016 book 'The Legacy of the Japanese Bluestocking Society (Seitosha)' is a pretty great writeup (one of those books you start reading and just keep going), and I'd also like to share their manifesto that was published in this first issue:
In the beginning, woman was truly the sun. An authentic person.
Now, woman is the moon. Living dependent on others, reflecting their brilliance.
She has the moon’s face, and its unhealthy pallor. And now, Seitō cries, newly born.
Created by the brains and hands of today’s Japanese women. Seitō cries, newly born.
Women’s undertaking is only sneered at, but I am convinced that there is hidden potential there…
Make us continue ceaselessly with our ardent prayer and spiritual concentration.
Make us do these to the best of our ability
until the day when we will bring hidden female talent into the open,
until the day when the hidden sun begins to shine again.
On that day we will rule everything, the entire world will fall into our hands.
On that day woman will no longer be the moon.
On that day she will become the sun, as in the beginning.
She will become an authentic person.

Yeah as someone who writes ads for Facebook but doesn't use it - the audience there is pretty reliable, but not growing. Meta is using the divide and conquer strategy with different apps, while X aims to be 'everything'. Threads... won't die, but I don't think it'll be 'good' for a long while.

c. crow @ccorone.bsky.social · 01/09/2024
I'm pretty sure their entire thing was to be the brand friendly, no controversy alternative to Twitter - but they've done this by totally killing manual discovery and making it all algo based, so there's an odd... superficiality? to interactions there. Not sure how to put it besides 'vibe bad'.

Wasn't kidding lol - this is from March this year and that's not 20 mins a day, it's 20 mins a MONTH. For advertisers that's... pathetic numbers lmao.
A graph showing how much time users spend on average on different social media apps every month. TikTok is at the top with 31 hours and 43 mins, followed by YouTube at 28 hours and 41 mins, and Facebook and Instagram with 18+ and 16+ hours.

At the bottom is Threads, with 20 mins per month.

You aren't the only one lol. Right now the user metrics for time spent on Threads are pretty bad, it's why a lot of advertisers are sort of eh on it (even though it's meant to be brand friendly). People just check in for a few mins and leave, they don't engage as long as they might have on Twitter.

I just feel like giving tons of people awards and then immediately going 'BTW you're gonna have to pay us $3.5k to put a picture of it on your site (: (:' is a pretty funny shtick. Who needs NFTs when you have licensing? If you just want a picture on your wall that's ONLY $595, though - bargain!

reputation and legitimacy is absolutely what Forbes and similar places sell, but it's also totally grifting corps too, which is funny. like, if you get on a top whatever list with them, they then urge you to pay thousands for merch and the license to DISPLAY the award on your website and comms.

I found this activity in my Amer Govt #polisky materials & thought I'd share. It's designed to get students reflecting on what politics is. I'd handout a paper with these three speeches & assign students in groups to read one of them & answer the questions about it. Then we'd do a class discussion.
Candidate #1 Speech: Politics is hard work. It requires us to meet those we disagree with as equals and to take their concerns and their perspectives seriously. This is something we all owe to each other because we all share something essential in common—we’re all Americans. We may look different, live differently, worship differently (or not at all), love different kinds of people, but we are all united by our shared love of this country. Because we share this country in common, we all have to be willing to give a little bit—to tolerate something that we maybe don’t like very much—in order to build a country that we can all share. It’s a hard truth that politics requires us to make tough choices. When we come together and make a political deal, we all won’t get everything we want and may have to give up something we think is important. But so long as we deal with each other fairly, we’ll have found a way to live together peacefully despite our differences and disagreements.Candidate #2 Speech: We have seen the face of the enemy and we know who they are. We know all the ways they’re trying to destroy this country and we are not going to let them. True patriots are seeing what’s happening to our country and they’re getting mad. They’re not just going to stand around and let the other side have it all their way—they’re going to fight! We’ve had enough of weak leaders who get elected and go to Washington and just give everything away to the other side. We’ve had enough backroom deals and corrupt compromises. We need strong leaders who will stand up to the other side. We need leaders who stand up for true Americans like us, against the enemies, both foreign and domestic, of everything our country holds dear. We understand that the stakes have never been higher for our country. We know what time it is. Real American patriots won’t stop until we’ve saved the country from all those who would betray what’s best about it. And if that means the gloves need to comeCandidate #3 Speech: We don’t need another politician. We need someone who can solve the problems facing ordinary Americans. If you send me to Washington, I’ll set aside poisonous and destructive partisanship and get to work fixing America’s problems. The problems we face don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican; they don’t care whether you’re white, black, brown, or purple; they affect everybody. I’ll work with anyone interested in making public policies that aren’t liberal or conservative but that work for all Americans. I’ve thought a lot about the policies that would fix America’s problems and I’ve talked to all the experts, both left and right, and come up with some commonsense solutions. I’ll be talking about them in the weeks and months to come and you can look at my plans now on my campaign’s website. The policies I would enact would save the taxpayers money while also doing more for the biggest challenges Americans say they’re facing today. These policies won’t always bQuestions
After reading your speaker’s speech, please consider the following the questions.
1.	What are the basic building blocks of politics according to your speaker? As in, who are the characters that politics involves—classes, groups, individuals or what? If groups, what kind of groups? Big, small? What characteristics do they have?

2.	What is the aim of politics as your speaker presents it?

3.	If you had to sum up what politics is all about in a word or two according to your speaker, what would it be?
After considering these questions, please read the other two passages.
4.	Are the approaches to politics these passages discuss compatible with each other? If so, how? If not, why not?

... Hmmm though I guess rhetoric aside they'd probably still fall under technocratic, since the eventual goal is 'effective policy' and they'd view authoritarian rule as more effective for getting things done than being pluralist.

c. crow @ccorone.bsky.social · 31/08/2024
This is really neat, and what a great lesson for your students! If you don't mind me asking, would the paper cover combinations of those modes? Like an authoritarian government that establishes technocratic policies, while jailing/exiling political opponents as enemies of the state?

You see this a lot, but it makes sense. Our brains don't measure the progress of time in a purely quantitative way. It's more qualitative Meaning: We tend to measure time in events, 'landmarks', i.e. "It's been a while since [significant event]", rather than "It's been 56 days since new year" /1

also I think part of it in the US at least is that one of the biggest pushers of 'woke bad' was DeSantis (he signed a bill and everything) - but since he dropped out of the 2024 race he's been kind of declining in popularity and relevance, and it feels like 'woke' as an pejotative is going with him.

that's a good point; woke was so nebulous in 2016 it could stand for everything, but all the groups that went for it had different demands that they're pushing for policy on now. like blaming wokeness for everything you feel is bad works, blaming DEI for a bridge falling... doesn't.

I suspect part of it is that if you're not involved in a media or media-adjacent industry, the newsroom can be kind of a black box; facts go in, stories come out. but there's often more stories or facts than space on the page, so editorial choices have to be made...

yeah like, old Trump did appeal to a lot of disenfranchised (and also kind of racist) people. but that appeal had to actually be made, not just assumed or taken for granted. before Biden dropped out, the appeal was being on the winning team - that didn't require Trump to do much. now though...

That said, I feel what you describe doesn't really play out where I currently live (not in the US right now lol) - Campylobacter and B Cereus outbreaks are pretty common here, and those in particular are just as if not more likely to hit groups that have vegetarian or plant-heavy diets.
