Just started reading Nancy Kress's new historical fantasy THE QUEEN'S WITCH and it's pretty great--Anne Boleyn & witches, baby. Already got a PW starred review and now it's an Amazon First Reads pick, so if you're a Prime member the Kindle version's free. Our SFWA grandmaster is still killing it

CHAPTER

1

The magic in that country was so thick and tenacious that it settled over the land like chalk-dust and over floors and shelves like slightly sticky plaster-dust. (Housecleaners in that country earned unusually good wages.) If you lived in that country, you had to de-scale your kettle of its encrusta-tion of magic at least once a week, because if you didn't, you might find yourself pouring hissing snakes or pond slime into your teapot instead of water. (It didn't have to be anything scary or unpleasant, like snakes or slime, especially in a cheerful household magic tended to reflect the atmosphere of the place in which it found itself-but if you want a cup of tea, a cup of lavender-and-gold pansies or ivory thimbles is unsatisfactory. And while the pansies-put dry in a vase-would probably last a day, looking like ordinary pansies, be-fore they went greyish-dun and collapsed into magic dust, something like an ivory thimble would begin to smudge and

crumble as soon as you picked it up.) The best way to do it was to have a fairy as a member of your household, because she (it was usually a she) could lay a finger on the kettle just as it came to a boil (absentminded fairies could often be recognised by a pad of scar-tissue on the finger they favoured for kettle-cleaning) and murmur a

RIP Ted White. Ted was asst editor at F&SF from 1963-68, where he also contributed fiction and book reviews. His editorials in the Feb and Mar '66 issues speak w/ feeling about the frustrations and joys of reading slush, and discovering writers like Larry Niven and Tom Disch. He loved great stories.

The 2008 Depression taught me that as soon as people start asking "Are we in a recession?" the answer is that we've actually been in a recession for some time, it's just that no one wants to acknowledge it. The mass layoffs the last 2 years have already resulted in more job losses than 2008.

Good literary translation requires understanding (language, culture, genre--on both sides of the translation) and an ability to write well. "AI" can't do that. There are no shortcuts. Treat your work and foreign language readers with the respect they deserve. You won't fool anyone with this.

Maybe audiences are just risk averse right now, so higher ticket prices (Broadway show, first run movie) discourage casual entertainment because people can just find something new on streaming instead. Want something new? Go dive into K-dramas on Netflix or whatever.

The smaller players are acting with the courage and righteousness that the bigger and more powerful entities all lack. What is the point of money, influence and power if you're not going to use them to do the right thing? Why does wealth reduce men into simpering cowards? Thoughts, Bob Iger?

As happens with every. Single. Pilot. Program. That ever looks at anything akin to UBI, it is cheaper to just straight up help people get to a modest financial baseline than to deal with the outcomes of not helping people in poverty. It’s not news until we deploy it at scale.

In short, I caution against the identification of small businesses as full-blown capitalism rather than looking at most small business owners as fellow members of the class of citizens exploited for the benefit of elite super-capitalists. /fini

Our unconscious acceptance of and treatment of these social structures as inevitable and the natural order of things instead of looking at it as a set of socially and collectively constructed values only benefits and perpetuates the rule of elites. 6/x

C.C. Finlay @ccfinlay.bsky.social · 13/09/2025
Many legal and social structures perpetuate this system. Just look at the benefits given to small businesses who own their property (which requires capital) compared to businesses that rent, allowing the rich to get richer. Other laws protect corporate wage theft but prosecute employee theft. 5/x

C.C. Finlay @ccfinlay.bsky.social · 13/09/2025
Creating confusion between the idea of business-as-vocation, or the expression of a person's labor, and business-as-exploitation, or the structural maintenance of undercompensated labor as a means for perpetuating the generational wealth of elites, also serves the interests of elites. 4/x

C.C. Finlay @ccfinlay.bsky.social · 13/09/2025
Elites promote the idea that small businesses = capitalism because it causes business owners to align their values and ambitions with the very same people who are often exploiting them. The select few small business owners who become elites are valorized to perpetuate this identification. 3/x

C.C. Finlay @ccfinlay.bsky.social · 13/09/2025
4 out of 5 new small businesses fail within the first five years precisely because they lack capital. Small businesses also function as a key way wealth in the US is transferred from lower-middle classes to the elites, through debt interest, franchise fees, reliance on corporate suppliers, etc. 2/x

C.C. Finlay @ccfinlay.bsky.social · 13/09/2025
I'm not sure we should think of local small businesses as capitalism, although becoming capitalists is the goal of many small business owners. Most small businesses I know are based on debt (borrowed from real capitalists) and paycheck-to-paycheck living, not previously accumulated capital. 1/x
