while i don't doubt that many are using ai, there are other explanations. at least, i cheat in my online courses by opening my laptop to look at notes / textbooks without being dinged by canvas. in-person proctored also presumably adds an element of time pressure.

the utility of this gets truly silly when you consider that you can give friends access to your plex library or access it yourself from any location as long as its host computer is running. so you're basically turning all of usenet into you and your friends' personal streaming service

with some know-how and setup it's possible to get certain services (debrids, usenet) to appear as a drive on your computer that you then point plex at. so you effectively press an "add" button on something and it becomes streamable in your library without having to download anything ahead of time
