In this year 2026 alone, Europe supports Ukraine with €100 billion whilst the US, India and China profit in making deals with war criminal Putin. And the media is criticising Europe?

This is not an easy solution. But is the only one. And it is necessary and urgent.

Well, with improved productivity of 6% per year (according to OBR, BoE, etc), that’s extra £150 billion for our economy. Per year. And this is before we go into EU funding of UK infrastructure projects and before going into the benefits of € membership or Schengen membership.

I bet I will get no engagement on this. And when the referendum will again be called, the false “net contribution“ argument will win again.

Joining the EU is a liberal policy. The EU is an institutional model of how countries can cooperate to achieve peace and prosperity. It is a model that the world would be better off embracing and expanding. That’s why people like Trump or Putin hate it. Be on the right side of history!

Indeed by 6% per year, or £150 billion extra economic output per year. But haven’t we debated this argument for more than 10 years now?

🇪🇺 Kallas: Russian strikes killed over 80 Ukrainian civilians in two days. Moreover, it has stepped up its hybrid attacks against Europe, both EU Member States and NATO Allies. Suspending sanctions on Russian diesel provides Moscow with more revenues to wage war.

How can you be a net contributor when you contribute £28 billion per year but get back £150 billion? How? And this is after more than 10 years of Brexit debates.

In the art of communication, which the BBc masters, framing from losers to winners is important. And the BBC has decided to frame Reform as winning something. Remember the channel 4 investigation (and by the way, not BBC). Why do you think Reform paid for good polls showing them on top?
000
Catio Miles @catiomiles.bsky.social · 7h
Yes, that would have been a good alternative. Yet the headline was framed as something positive for Reform.

Here is a screenshot of the BBC website (showing the URL) clearly showing the graphic in question as part of their report. It should be emphasised that this is the first breakdown of the votes in the report. Heading this breakdown with "Reform came Fourth" is simply unacceptable.
Screenshot showing "Reform UK come in fourth, ahead of the LibDems and Restore"

But that is a pro Reform headline anyway. Many other alternatives could have been chosen, for example: “despite racist attacks from Reform against the Labour candidate, Reform got 10 times fewer votes.”

Catio Miles @catiomiles.bsky.social · 8h
Now that comment was deleted. But the BBC support for Reform continues.

Maybe But the only relevant comment on Reform performance there from any journalist should have made reference to their racist attacks against the Labour candidate. Has the BBC done that? No. Why?
110
Catio Miles @catiomiles.bsky.social · 8h
Maybe. But the BBC could have also said: “despite racist attacks from Reform against the Labour candidate, Reform got 10 times fewer votes than Labour”. Have they said it?

In just two days, Russia’s rampage of violence has killed 78 people and wounded 215. Buses attacked. Innocent civilians targeted as they go about their daily lives. Never to return home. Pure and simple - these are war crimes.

Lib Dems believe in fairness, equality and human dignity. Davey's leadership has shown boldness on Trump, and has slowly got better on Europe, but has been tepid at best on the issues of increasing transphobia, hate crimes and poverty. Unfunded tax cuts should never be our answer to those problems.

Forgetting left or right for a second, honestly, the total lack of messaging of what the Libdems stand for, that is distinct from other parties. I get asked this by friends and family and it's a hard to answer. Burnham swiped Care, EU and PR . It was easy for him to do. Now what are the Libdems for?

This challenge to Ed Davey's leadership is timely and necessary. Lib Dem support is flatlining, and Davey's only response has been increasingly desperate attempts to appeal to Tory voters, most recently with unfunded tax cuts, which is both amoral and looks ridiculous.

Note: officially Russia has just banned diesel exports until 31 October as it cannot cover internal needs. Unlikely Putin will cut supplies to his country ahead of difficult winter months. But if he does, maybe people will go on streets against him.

When Zelenskyy calls Trump weak it isn’t just rhetoric. Trump showed the world how weak he was when he bribed with cash to vote GOP. Putin saw that vulnerability and offered him a crappy deal on diesel as a lifeline. Trump is weak and the West’s biggest enemies can see it.
