okay it's genuinely cool to see Six Feet Under as high as it is (it should be higher) seeing The OA on the list at all is unhinged but i support it

i have to be honest i always saw flipping the senate as a longshot & i would rather democrats fail to flip the senate if they're going to cave to republican framing on trans rights. if talarico & peltola keep throwing trans people under the bus, i'd prefer that they lose

yes there were little kids watching Buddy (2026) with their parents and yes they walked out, but what's weird is they came back, too

love when the youtube AI comment summary gives you a real gem
screenshot of a siobhan brier aguilar video where the AI summary of the comments reads, "topic: viewers ztrongly dislike here." it is clear in context that "her" is elizabeth gilbert, not siobhan, but it still looks wild you know

i think the fun thing is even if AI proves incapable of replacing anyone's job, i doubt public opinion will improve much on it, bc they made it clear their first automation targets aren't jobs, they're the things people would like to do instead of working

does anyone else remember Twisted! by Miranda Leek
a drawing of a dragon-like living roller coaster kinda standing on a set of tracks with the moon behind him. text on image says "Twisted written and illustrated by Miranda Leek." It is a self-published booka later, more well-drawn book cover for the same self-published book. In this one, a dragon-like living roller coaster crawls toward the observer across the tracks with bared teeth and muscular arms. He has gold teeth. There's still a big moon in the background. This time there is no exclamation point in the title

I enjoyed The Odyssey (2026) but I have one historical nitpick. The phrase “Jiminy Christmas” is a minced oath for “Jesus Christ”. As the story is set around 1200 B.C. it is unlikely that Odysseus would have said the phrase even once, let alone the dozens of times he says it in the film

I do not wish to debate you on the truth of the point re Plantner, but hear me now, educational attainment is not a proxy for class. Yes whole careers have been made arguing it is. BUT PLEASE HEAR ME NOW. EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT IS NOT A PROXY FOR WORKING CLASS. JUST STOP.

Several students wrote of the moral confusion implicit in a college that promotes AI and says don't cheat but makes it really, really easy to cheat. One said they don't pay attention to AI policies because they don't think the college really wants to know what's going on. 9/

This is important because if we approach the problem as one of misinformation rather than racism, we’re going to spend a lot of time debunking things they’re not actually concerned about, rather than addressing the racism and protecting the targets of it.

But yeah, I don’t think they genuinely believe some secret group is somehow throwing the election in Los Angeles; they believe the “right” voters preferred him, so he should win.

a thing i like about Boots Riley is he clearly likes twists where the characters find out about secret monsters, but he avoids falling into the trap of ever doing "a small group of secret momsters control capitalism" like the monsters are a thing humans have become or been made into

"somehow"
Quote from article in the quoted post: "Somehow, the dog had triggered the shotgun – which had a live round chambered – to fire, damaging the vehicle and striking a female passerby."

i think Boots Riley makes movies with the assumption that his politics are at odds on some base level with the form of filmmaking, though I Love Boosters may be his attempt to break out of that constraint

i'm sorry they fucking what
quote from article in East Bay Times about the CA governor race: "Democratic operatives have been running a semi-secret campaign to tout Hilton's ties to unpopular president Donald Trump, hoping it will spark a groundswell of Republican support that propels him into one of the top two spots, thus avoiding a showdown between Democrats.

That's precisely what happened two years ago in the U.S. Senate race, when Democrat Adam Schiff helped Republican Steve Garvey qualify for the November election, avoiding a showdown with Democrat Katie Porter. Porter is now running for governor, but her support has fallen to 7% in the latest poll."

i think "many such cases" is going to be a big anachronism in future writing about this era. specifically i mean it'll show up in period pieces that take place slightly before it became a common thing to say

Amy Finn, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, told me that "part of the magic of how kids learn is that they have less knowledge of what they're going to experience and fewer expectations about what's going to be relevant. They don't have that adult filter of strategically extracting things from their experience, and so they retain a lot of unexpected details that adults would find irrelevant. That allows them to be creative in ways that adults are not creative.
" The child
brain's tendency toward delightful non sequitur and unpredictable meanderings is not aligned with an L.L.M.'s orientation toward speed and sleekness and summary, toward frictionless, rational outcomes. (An obsession with
outcomes-over-process is also a hallmark of the universally loathed style of instruction known as "teaching to the test," which began taking hold in American classrooms in the early two-thousands, after the No Child Left Behind Act tied federal funding to standardized assessments.)

lol sorry, gang. I'm just browsing Kickstarter tonight and I see so many projects with AI art and obvious ChatGPT copy. The whole point of a Kickstarter pitch is to assure your audience of your competence. Nothing about using genAI does that. And that's why your shit isn't funding and never will.

one of my biggest pet peeves in conversations about detecting AI is when people say anything to the effect that the telltale sign of AI writing is it's "too good" (for x student to have written). no! AI writing isn't good! using that language just makes students think AI writes better than them!

two things aswell -- 1) a person w/out kids + renting an apartment + shitty employer health ins could get 50% raise and still not afford house, kids, or better health ins. 2) no matter how much of a raise that person has gotten, the CEO & board of the company they work for has gotten SO much richer
