After they lose in Round 1 this year it'll be fascinating to see where they salary dump him

There's a very real possibility Deshaun "Creepy Hands" Watson leads the Cleveland Browns to the playoffs this year

Assuming he's actually healthy, I think the way you view Paul George will be a bit of a litmus test for whether you feel the issue for the Celtics was that Jaylen Brown didn't fit Mazzulla Ball well enough, or if you feel their issue was a lack of options when Mazzulla Ball stops working.

i think there's a strong mixture of "they're paid because they believe certain things" and "they believe certain things because that's what the people who pay them believe"

IMO every sports league should have automatic franchise valuations performed each off-season, with the results made public. Any franchise whose valuation was more than a couple spots higher than where it ranked in payroll for the previous season would have to pay huge luxury taxes.

The Celtics season opener will be more exciting than any playoff baseball game, and the same will be true of like 75% of the regular season games the Celtics play.

Dodgers - Yankees is the World Series we deserve before the inevitable (hopefully permanent) lockout

I think if you're only trying to be in the Wild Card hunt and you don't really care to expend the resources to be one of the Upper Crust (ie World Series) teams, you should do weird stuff in the 2-3 playoff games you get. Try to break the record for pitchers used in a game. Bunt every at bat, etc.

One of the things about major league sports that strikes me as pretty bad is that the franchises go up in value so easily & quickly that even if the fan base has radically different objectives than the owner, there's no plausible way to exert pressure on the owner's bottom line

The Red Sox season was a smashing success! Do you know that there were 5 teams that spent more money than the Red Sox and had fewer wins? That's crazy! Do you know how much more the Yankees spent to win 6 more games? Like $90 million more!

The Paul George talk among Celtics people is starting to driving me a little nuts. I saw Gary Washburn -- usually a Celtics skeptic -- talking about how "Paul George was pretty good three years ago in LA," suggesting he could return to that level. He is turning 37 in April!

Hey but did you know the Red Sox spend almost $100 million less on payroll than the Yankees and still made the playoffs so who's the real winner?

T. Ferox @transferox.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
You wanna win in the playoffs you pay for power bats But we all know the Red Sox consider a season a smashing success if they win 85 games and get a Wild Card berth

I get that it's training camp season so hope springs eternal, but I am getting the sense that a lot of people are talking themselves into the Celtics being a lot different in how they play. I haven't seen a convincing explanation as to how PG (a guy who will play 40-50 games) will drive the change.

The late game stagnation has been a hallmark of the team for as long as Tatum has been a focal point. I really don't think that JB was the primary driver of it. I'm not expecting a real change. They need someone whose instinct is to attack inside when things get tough. PG ain't it.

At the very least you'd hope it would be like a painter choosing to paint the same subject over and over, that it would become more refined, sharper over time. But the reason these people repeat themselves is they are not only devoid of ideas but also lazy

the silver lining of your football team having a one year turnaround before crashing down into dysfunctional mediocrity again is it's not hard to fall back into the old rhythms. it's like muscle memory. we're back baby

Look, I'm still fundamentally optimistic. I think in January 2029 the country will have a new President and the Patriots will be set up to draft a new starting QB

I said this last week but I'll say it again: When Brady left, I tried to prepare myself for the QB carousel. Wandering in the wilderness, trying to find an answer at QB. What I wasn't ready for is guys showing enough to make you think they're really good only to fall apart within a year.

It's hard to think of many examples of sports related things that have left me feeling as fooled & foolish as Drake Maye. I had my doubts after year 1, then last year I allowed myself to believe. He's got "it." He's the guy. Right now he looks like one of the biggest blockheads in the league.

My take is that best-of lists that don't break down by genre are inherently flawed. Different genres are trying to accomplish different things. No movie, no story, can be great for all audiences. Things that try to be for everyone almost always suck.

i've always trusted Brad Stevens (ok i'll admit i was ready to fire him in the hours after the trade, i'm only human), my concern has to do with the mandate he's operating under. what is the vision for the team? is it about maximizing Tatum's prime? or is it something else?

As I creep further toward middle age (arguably I'm already there but shh) I become less concerned with what is Good in an objective sense and more concerned with the stuff that really does it for me, and also understanding why. This album really does it for me.

to be fair most republicans do seem very much like the kind of people that could have a 15-20 minute "conversation" where they just yammer about whatever they want to say while the other person grunts noncommittally

easy to see & point out that these people are not up for the fight, but imo it's more fundamental than that -- they like the life they've had in DC for years and they refuse to accept that what it means to be in government in 2026 is just different than it was in 2016. and it's never going back.

you could make a lot of this mania vanish by making college free. the worst parents think they're working a new market inefficiency by making their kid out-hustle the "lazy" kids. but even chill parents are holding a psychological lotto ticket that their kid puts up numbers that end in scholarships
