From rare book (physical) to 3D scan (digital) to cleaned-up 3D model (digital) to 3D printed object (physical). This was a really fun process to think through texture and materiality of a tactile book object. This was a test, and I learned a lot from the process. More to come later this year!
The title page of volume one of The Gospel of John embossed in moon type. The same moon title page, but a screenshot of a 3D scan of the page that is blue with scanner guide markers placed randomly on the page. The same 3D scan but now white with the extra details around the page deleted and cleaned up as a 3D model. The same title page in moon, but now a 3D printed physical object printed with purple filament. There are printed supports on the front, right side, and base still attached.

If logging in did not work → Spend hours troubleshooting account / login. If that works, go to Try to do your task. If no → Give up and call customer service. If spending hours troubleshooting doesn’t work, also give up and call customer service. For #spacetober_challenge day 29 prompt orbit: #mathematician and #astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)! 🧪🐡🧮🎢🔭 #histsci We remember him for his role in the Scientific Revolution, and his three laws of planetary motion in particular. His laws modified Copernicus’ heliocentric model; he replaced 🧵
My linocut portrait of Johannes Kepler on cream coloured washi paper. Kepler is in Renaissance garb printed in indigo. He holds a compass and rests his hand on his model of nested Platonic solids from Mysterium Cosmographicum, printed in gold ink. Above that in silver in are 7 musical staves with notes next to symbols for related planetary bodies: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Over his other shoulder are 3 schematic diagrams drawn in ellipses (oriented with the semi-major axes horizontal) in magenta. The top one relates to his first law and shows an ellipse cut in two horizontally, the two foci labelled F and F’ and a triangle drawn to a point P on the ellipse (FPF’). The middle ellipse (2nd law) shows the Sun at a focus, and a series of circles on the ellipse as a planet such that the sections are equal area and alternate colouring (magenta or none) like a peppermint. The bottom ellipse (3rd law) is cut in half with semi-major and semi-minor axes shown

I cannot stress how important it is that the issue of police records is dealt with and not brushed under the carpet as it has been for decades. The fact that they aren't Public Records is an accident of history, but the impact of this lack of regulatory control is immense.

🧵 This splendid image, released on 23 May 2024 as part of Euclid's Early Release Observations (ERO), shows Messier 78 (the central and brightest region), a nursery of star formation 1,300 ly away in the constellation of Orion. Enjoy! ➡️ www.esa.int/Science_Expl... 🔭 🧪 #stellarastro #ESA
The image shows a “filamentary orange veil” covering a bright star-forming region, with a dark background dotted with stars and galaxies of various sizes, from small bright points to star-like shapes. The foreground veil extends from the upper left to the lower right, with an appearance reminiscent of a seahorse. Bright stars illuminate the seahorse’s “eye” and “chest” regions with purple light, while in the “tail” there are three bright spots arranged like a traffic light.
