I think there are reasonable concerns about level of surveillance here. I do want the camera to take a picture of every speeding car. I do not want the cameras recording everywhere I am observed. No, I don't have an expectation of privacy, but I also don't want to be followed around (digitally)

If the point is that government shouldn't do anything that might infringe on rights, that's libertarianism. I think speeding is bad and dangerous. I think speed cameras are an effective way to enforce speed limits. I think we should demand limited use devices for that task.

I think if you're arguing that speed cameras are as bad or susceptible to abuse as an ALPR dragnet, you should provide some evidence. They are very common all over the world, so it should be easy. I didn't find any, but maybe you will.
