from the preposterously great Stay Dead by Natalie Shapero
Long Week Talking
I am ashamed to keep thinking of death
as a chute that connects to the garbage. I know I should picture it more like the pneumatic tubes
at banks of the past: you put in your name and your paper and up you go. I know a bank
should be the operative metaphor for every facet of existence, every time.
When I fail to liken anything to a bank, I must be tired.
That's not the real me; that's the long week talking. Time
for bed. Time for the open window and my head on the narrow pillow. The hectoring sky. The streetlight's beam is bright as the bright saved people see when they die, but I don't die—

i love that we got 4 new hubble images today and we still continue to get more after 35 years 🥹 hubble really is the little telescope that could!!!
Composite shows four Hubble images in quarters. At top left is a crisp view of Mars in shades of orange, blues, and browns. At top right is planetary nebula NGC 2899, which is shaped like a single macaroni noodle, with its central torus appearing semi-transparent and blue and green, and its top and bottom edges in orange. At bottom left is a tiny portion of the Rosette Nebula. Very dark gray material shaped like a triangle takes up the center. At bottom right is barred spiral galaxy NGC 5335 with a milky yellow center that forms a bar surrounded by multiple blue star-filled spiral arms that wrap up counterclockwise.

Looking for a last-minute lesson plan? On WWB Campus, we’ve got you covered: teach Iman Mersal’s poem “Sometimes Wisdom Possesses Me” using our tips, resources, and discussion questions. Find all that and more at the link: buff.ly/rgXITFf
A floating paper boat with the text “Teach it! ‘Sometimes Wisdom Possesses Me’ by Iman Mersal, translated from Arabic by Khaled Mattawa. Free lesson ideas to use this poem in the classroom”
The text “‘Possessed’ by wisdom. ‘One day wisdom will possess me/and I will not go to the party.’” Put the word “possessed” on the board and have students call out associations with it. / Have students read definitions of “possessed” and select the ones that seem most relevant to the poem. / Ask students: ‘What does it mean to have wisdom possess you?" and "What else might possess us, besides wisdom?’”
The text ‘“Possessed’ by wisdom. Write on the board: ‘One day wisdom will possess me/and I will not . . .’ Ask students to brainstorm potential conclusions to that sentence. Then, have students write their own poems about someone's wise or unwise decision, which may also include the lines above.”
The text “JOIN US FOR MORE TIPS. To explore other lesson plans, videos of readings and conversations with the author and translator, the history of women in Egyptian revolutions and politics, works of prose poetry in conversation with Mersal’s poem, and so much more, sign up for a free account and subscribe to our newsletter! wwb-campus.org/members”
