As in: perhaps mega conferences are just an inherently unsustainable model for research anyway and the AI boom's just the straw that breaks the camel's back etc (which @wattenberg.bsky.social's comment gets at)

yeah, I get that – the AI review thing is arguably an instance of them listening to the community, but the flipside, echoing you comment, was a sudden change in workload for ACs = loads unplanned lost sleep / weekend -- but I wonder whether it's at all evitable given the scale of these things

Caluã de Lacerda Pataca @caluapataca.com · 05/10/2026
And again, the new system is an answer to a crisis, so *something* had to change, and this one seemed relatively benign. (The AI assisted desk rejection of course is a different story, but it was shelved for now)

I mean, I guess there will be cases of unfair "punishments", but my bet is that they will be relatively rare. We'll of course have to see, but I'm not convinced that this will be a significantly harsher system than typical peer review -- we've always been subject to random mismatches to screw us ovr

Caluã de Lacerda Pataca @caluapataca.com · 04/10/2026
...eg not accepting any request there are a lot of moving pieces and yeah the process needs refining, but submission explosion is a huge issue and a new review process seemed inevitable? (I am very hopeful for Amy Ko's peer review common currency being a part of whatever solution though)
000
Caluã de Lacerda Pataca @caluapataca.com · 04/10/2026
Sure, there's a subjective "expected good faith" criteria here, where indeed you potentially could be punished if you reject a review request that *seems* to match your expertise (eg you've published papers that touch its topics etc), but that seems a reasonable defense against potential abuse...
200
Caluã de Lacerda Pataca @caluapataca.com · 04/10/2026
...their expertise. And: although there are automatic recommendations, we're not required to follow them (from the Slack it seems that many of us have used them as fall backs for papers that fall outside of our own networks etc).

It's my first year as AC, so I have no basis for comparison, but that's not the sense I'm getting. We'll see how it works, but the review requirements seem to me like an honest attempt at balancing supply and demand for peer reviewers, and invited reviewers can reject a request if it falls outside..

[Left side, an illustration of the "Virgin" character (from the Virgin vs. Chad meme format) modified into a robot. His head is a retro computer monitor with a glowing red dot on the screen, and his body has thin metallic limbs. A computer mouse hangs from his back by a wire, and loose paperclips float around his legs.]

"the virgin "AGI existential risk"

- programmer LARP fantasy that makes coding the single most important skill for saving humanity
- fake and made up
- entirely based on thought experiments
- assumes that there's this vaguely defined concept known as "intelligence" that can be linearly increased as if it were a mathematical quantity
- projects an anthropomorphic drive toward control and power onto algorithms that just do statistics to spit out words; colonialist self-report
- Zero evidence
- sponsored by billionaires who want to make their technology seem more important than it is
- blackmails you from the future using faulty logic; doesn't actually make any sense
- "oh no, i guess we have to build the Doom Machine now. i guess the course of technological progress is inevitable, oh well""

[Right side, an illustration of the "Chad" character, replaced by a globe of the Earth. A large fire burns at the top of the globe, and three black oil derricks are on the yellow landmass, which is shaped like a facial profile. He has muscular blue arms and legs and wears yellow shoes.]

"the Chad Global Warming

- incomprehensibly complex and interconnected polycrisis
- reveals deep-rooted flaws with the dominant politico-economic paradigm; demands a fundamental shift of human value systems by its sheer physical existence
- verified by the entire scientific community
- billionaires don't want you to think about it because it is too scary
- resists ideological simplification
- will actually kill you
- divine retribution for fossil capital's greed and wanton exploitation of the natural world
- doesn't even need intelligence to threaten humanity's survival"

Vaguely remember Zappa saying that A&R in the 60s/70s was run by older folks who had no idea about what would stick, but were cognisant of this, i.e., risks were taken (and we got a rich and diverse scene as a result). Then grown-up hippies thought "maybe there's a formula we could perfect..."
